VNH Spotlight asset

Unread postby artimrj » Sat Jan 07, 2012 10:28 am

Has anyone been playing with adding lights to their route? I found an asset, VNH Spotlight and placed then on my yard floodlights. I was amazed how nice it worked. Then I went and added more. When I went back in, the first lights I placed were not working but the latest additions were. Seems everytime I add more lights, the previous addtions wont work anymore. I havebeen playing for 3 hours and I also think it is a per tile item/bug. Pulling my hair out.

Hi Bob,

I had a similar problem (though not with lights) in a RW edit session once too, somehow RW seemed to "forget" all scenery additions once that tile got unloaded from memory, in spite of saving frequently! There was, however, an easy fix -- exit the sim, reboot the PC. The lost work was still lost, but at least the vanishing scenery problem stopped. Ever since then I have made sure to run RW only on a relatively "freshly booted" PC and never had this problem again.

That VNH Spotlight asset is part of my RW3 updated GN Streetlights, which so far I found to be working quite fine (on the latest IIR, for example). However, that doesn't necessarily mean that they're actually working okay in all situations, so if my memory issue theory proves wrong please let me know so I can try and analyze the lights assets.

Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael,

Dont think it is a memory issue. Last night before I went to bed was when it started happening. At that point I had been in RW about 7 hours. Went to sleep and first thing this morning, I started back in with everything fresh. I shut down the CPU when I go to bed. So I had a fresh reboot and cool CPU/GPU. Same problem resulted. The reason I think it may be a tile related thing is because I added lights in the west end, then went to the east end and added more in another session and both sets still worked. But if I place a light close to another one that works in either yard, they all quit except the new placements, for that yard.

Hi,

This is strange. I honestly have no idea what may be going on here, my only guess at this point is that it may be caused by the "VNH Spotlight" not being an actual scenery item. Maybe something is missing in the blueprint file, or something along these lines? In my routes I've so far only used this when attached as child to another object, in which cases I never had an issue with "vanishing lights".

Here's an idea: you could try to add the spotlight asset as a child to another object, something very small (fence post?) so it won't be noticed. Or maybe something that's all-transparent (a repainted 2D tree, for example), check my GN assets for a file called "gn_blank.tgpcdx" for an all-alpha texture.

Cheers,
Michael

What I did was place all the lights in one session for 3.5 hours ;), now they all work. I had to do something, actually I wish I would not have found it (the light) until I finished the route. !*hp*! But it is all done now.

"But it is all done now."

Sure . . . but how long will it take three RW users to change a light bulb? !**duh*!!

Thanks for all your efforts, Bob. We should be able to see for miles!
