Rough/Disused Tracks

Unread postby Csxgp38-2 » Sun Sep 11, 2011 11:20 am

Hi, I was wondering if it's possible in Railworks 2 to make a track be "bumpy"? Aka, as in real life where the cars seem to bounce and sway on old disused track? Thanks, Harrison.

The discussions regarding cab sway in the upcoming RW3 update mentioned the ability to set a value that will control the condition, thereby the amount of sway, on a particular section of track. Set it to the correct setting and you may only be able to cross it at a very slow speed or risk a derailment.

Should be interesting to see in practice.

That will be interesting to see. Can't wait to have a proper old track like some around me in NC. By the way, thanks a ton Jerret! I now have a somewhat realistic disused track for the Martin Pass. :)

Does this affect the track visually at all?

GreatNortherner's track rule has a variety of visually old, weedy, rusty, and non-rusty track.

Can you describe the solution offered by Jerret?

Yeah, you take the PON track rule (but it also works for any other track rule) and on your "straight" section, you go left and right every few feet (using the measurements that come up at the bottom of the screen). Thats pretty much it, I also added a few bumps to the terrain so the track bumps up and down kind of like its old jointed rail.

How does the track rule relate to this? I just did a test by splitting the track at close intervals, and editing the Y value in the object coordinates by a negligible amount. I then welded the joins again, and inspected the now bumpy looking track, and there are subtle, but noticable 'joints' in it now.

I hope this new feature in RW3 lives up to the hype.

Tested the new feature on my route, cab rocked alot on the section I had already done like this, the other section I used the new feature and it rocked less, might have to adjust it more. Doing it manually takes longer, but I think it looks more realistic in my tests so far. Cab rock/sway is really good though, feels like riding on a real train!

I just noticed a property in the right-flyout on track called "unevenness." Does this bear any relation?

the "unevenness" in the flyout is what i was trying to create in RW2, this method i have thought of is completely in the past now. I set mainline for 30.000, sidings and branches varying from 50.000 to 80.000, and the worst of the worst i set anywhere between 100.000 to 200.000. i will be changing alot of the bad track in my route where the locos shift from the left to the right way too much but will keep some.

Cool, thanks for mentioning the values you use. Every little hint helps!
