I just ran into this, and wanted to share. Some of the books are painfully old, but perhaps someone can make use of them:

This is a great find. With only a few minutes of browsing through the first book I happened to click on, I came across a wealth of information relating to track design---specifically with regard to superelevation and transition spirals (easements). For example, there is an equation given for calculating the proper superelevation through a curve:
e = 0.000058D*V^2
...where e represents the height difference between the inner and outer rail, D is the degree of the curve (D=5730/radius), and V is the velocity, in miles per hour, of the fastest anticipated train.
With the upcoming release of TS2012 and the introduction of greater control over track geometry, this is exactly the sort of information that can be put to good use inside the sim.

Anyone have a Google account that would be willing to grab these two books and send them to me?

Hawk,
Got them for you, but they are huge (39.3 and 28.2MB each). Feel free to contact me directly if you can give me a location to upload them to.

Got 'em.
I didn't even think about these books being about the steam era.

Still interesting stuff in them though.
