DEM "T" Key Crashes (RS)

Unread postby BigVern » Tue Jun 30, 2009 4:59 pm

Wondering if anyone has had this annoyance occur? Just setting up a route which falls across 35N 113W and 36N 113W. Got most of the DEM extracted into the route okay but on hitting the T key where the two sections adjoin there's a 1km strip which will not terraform and indeed pressing the T key causes the route editor to crash. I've tried re-sourcing the DEM/hgt data and attempting to patch in Microdem before converting back to hgt. However the same thing happens...if I try and extract the data on or near this 1km strip, RS crashes.

I can manually raise the terrain with the Level function, no problem so I guess the only option will be to manually sculpt the terrain across this section based on the topo maps.

The DEM in this area is a bit of an oddity as it appears there's no NED terrain on the USGS server, just the SRTM but I would be interested to know if it's the DEM or RS at fault!

Hi Vern,

This is a bug in RS/RW when using 30m SRTM files.

What you'll need to do is use 90m SRTM DEM for the problematic area. Otherwise, you could use ReDem and USGS Seamless data which do a much better job.
Cheers!

Thanks Marc, I'll get that sorted.

Reading up on the GC Railway it seems that a Wild West show prior to departure and a (staged) train robbery on return are mandatory. That could make for an interesting lineside diorama!

The other tourist railway that's currently got my interest is Fort Bragg to Willitts aka "The Skunk", maybe more scenic than the GC.
