BN Signaling Rules for next Big Horn build

Colleagues,

For the next build of Big Horn Sub route, which will be done at some point between soon and in 5 years **!!bang!!** , I have written some (simplified) signal scripts based on BN's signaling rules (I couldn't find any signaling rules of the CB&Q, only BN and GN, so I went with BN for this route).

These scripts are based on the default US Cajon Pass scripts, but with some changes to the lights setup. I also eliminated the speed rules, so now this has to be set via the track speed (for example, 25 mph through the turnout). Restricted speed will be triggered by E (exit) links placed on trackage designated as "yard" in the route editor. Though the RW default [15 mph = restricted aspect] might still be included too, I haven't checked that yet.

The following aspects are now working:
- clear
- approach medium (flashing yellow)
- approach
- diverging clear (red over green)
- diverging approach medium and diverging approach (not very prototypically, but highly practically merged into one signal, red over flashing yellow)
- restricting (optionally with flashing red or steady lunar lights)

Here's a short clip of the signal set.

If anybody is interested in getting a copy of these for their own route, please send me an email or PM.

Don't wait until the next Big Horn sub gets out, this might still be a while.

Cheers,
Michael

This may be a day late and a dollar short but this link has some CB&Q signal aspects.

Hi

Ah! Al Krug's website has CB&Q signaling rules.
**!!bang!!** **!!bang!!** **!!bang!!**

Oh boy, I've visited this site so often while building that route but never saw this page before. Thanks very much for the link!!! At first glance there seem to be only small differences between the Q's and the BN's signals, so I'll do some changes to the scripts and build some actual CB&Q signals for the BHS.

Also, judging by older photos it seems that the CB&Q was using searchlight signals, can anybody confirm this for the Big Horn sub too?

Cheers,
Michael

I recall in an old trainz magazine there was a section about this area and in the photo if i recall correctly it showed searchlight signals for the CB&Q.

Hi,

Thanks again for your help with this one, I think I'm getting quite close to a nicely prototypical simulation of (some) CB&Q signals. Not sure if they are anywhere near to what used to be on the Big Horn Sub back in the days of the "Q", but they seem to work and look somehow like I imagine they should, after stuyding the rules and some pictures.

The aspects that will be covered are:
- Clear
- Approach Medium
- Approach
- Resitricting Approach Medium
- Restricting
- Permissive
- Stop
- Diverging Clear
- Diverging Approach Medium
- Diverging Approach

The approach medium (flashing yellows) work fine and so do the diverging aspects, also on the signals further up the line. For example, if the signal at the turnout shows Diverging Approach (red over yellow), the signal before this one will show Diverging Approach Medium (Red over flashing yellow).

Here are a few screenshots from around Kleenburn.

A three head signal: clear

Approach

Restricting. This aspect will always show when the active path goes through one of the exit ("E") links of the signal. Usually this will be at yard tracks or signal protected spurs like the mine yard at Kleenburn.

And a permissive signal with three heads.
As it stands, the white "permissive lamp" (???) will always be lit, which I assume is totally wrong.
However, I didn't get it to work when linked to the red light, so this will have to suffice for now.

Cheers,
Michael

Great work! I will have a need for CB&Q/BN signalling on a future route project.

I also love the new trackage on the CB&Q! Is that the 3d branchline that was from your other route, or is that a mainline version? i would hope there are many versions to come, i would hate to see those old spur lines dissapear. (like the ones covered in grass with rotten ties)

i hate asking this and i know many people hate answering it, but do you have an eta on the next version of the bighorn?

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply, I totally missed that there were some new replies here. !!**sorry**!!

Unfortunaly I can't really say when the next build will be done. Completing the signaling is my main priority and then I'll see what comes next. Maybe I'll release another v3 version, as a signals-only update, so scenario builders can start doing their magic. It's too early to tell, but I'm afraid many scenarios based around Sheridan might also require some rework as I'm trying to add some signal protection to the yard, so you'll be able to see several AIs moving around at Sheridan at the same time. Hopefully this'll work.

Cheers,
Michael
