You're right on it... the resolution for ground textures sucks. The problem is small texture sheets that get s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d. I hope someday we can have 2048x2048 pixel ground texture sheets. Hopefully, some "new technology" from RSC will help make that possible through better utilization of today's pc's and graphics subsystems. !*don-know!*

I think there was mention of higher quality ground textures. I'm pretty sure you can make and use higher quality ones right now, if you don't mind some enormous performance hit.

I have been trying to think up ways round it, I think a selection of trackbed lofts might help a lot.

What route is this from? I haven't seen textures that bad in the routes I run. Then again, I'm not running the "latest and greatest" version of the Nvidia driver on my GTX470. I'm running the 266.68's

Let me know the route, and I'll fire it up after work tonight.

Heh, MS is not a good source for your drivers, they are always behind a few revs. Always go to the chip manufacture's site. Which is in this case is Nvidia. I am running 275.33.

Here is a shot from my route (click on it for a larger picture). I included a bit of the ground decal in the next tile to show that it could be much much worse.

Not to mention MS does have a habit of not properly installing drivers.

The ground res has not changed for the update.
Going from a an 8x256 wang texture set (with mips) to a 8x512 set (with mips) is no small task.
While we have worked on many areas, that one was not on our to do list this time round.

If you want higher res next to the track then look to run a loft alongside/under the track.

I used the ballast texture from my tracks to make my ballast ground texture. It's pretty simple to do, but it will come out a little bit fuzzier than on the track. That requires some compromise on the color and texture of your ballast rock up front, and then a touch of sharpening on the ground texture sheet on the back-end to help it match a little closer.

I've been tinkering with this sharpening trick.... viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2477&p=21647&hilit=pop#p21647

.... haven't tried it yet on a ground texture.
