easy way to convert img to HGT

Hi all, so I would like to see if there's an easier method for converting .IMG to .HGT files so that TS can read them. I also was wondering if anyone knew of any sites where there was 1/9 ARC, or anything of high resolution already available as .hgt files. Since I'm basically starting the whole reading line/Harrisburg line section of my route over, I would like to get the highest DEM data available, and maybe I'll even re-do the lower DEM sections of the Lehigh portion as well?

Hi Ken,

While all my development efforts are for ORTS - I've been down this path. We can use the same HGT data with ORTS.

From what I've read - all 1/9 arc sec DEM collection has stopped because they switched to a higher 1-meter standard. The 1-meter standard files from USGS are so small in area coverage and large in file size - they are difficult to work with. Our old DEMEX tool can't process them.

I've also made the query of various sites that make tools for dealing with DEM - and the consensus was - there was no way of converting high resolution Geo Tiffs - into HGT files.

If someone knows how to do this - I would welcome the information as well.

OKay, so I found 1 meter Tiff files and downloaded them. I don't want to download ArcGIS all over again, are there any good alternatives that will let me convert them from .tif to .hgt?
