Railworks America

So after playing TS on what was a pretty good laptop when I bought it ten years ago, said laptop finally could not handle TS anymore. When I went to load routes like the Bergen, TS would just crash.

I had been saving up for, and now have acquired, a proper desktop gaming rig. I had been working on building a couple of custom routes in 2019 that I gave up on until I could get better hardware.

I've been relearning the use of navigational data by watching YouTube videos and re-reading articles on route building, but it seems like there are often new and better sources for DEM/SRTM data, so I was wondering what people would recommend in this day and age?

The USGS site is still the best source for American DEM data.

Without sounding like I am hijacking this thread,I would love to see an updated tutorial on route building. The USGS interface has changed since the last one was published.

I started making a new one a year ago before some life stuff got in the way. The USGS has changed the format of most of their high resolution DEM files, so there are a few extra steps to the process to getting the data into Railworks now. I will put together an updated tutorial after getting settled back into the game.

I started to create a new route about two months ago, and that is when I noticed the changes. I did not want to "wing it",and attempt to figure it out. I am looking forward to an updated tutorial.

Please do! It would be immensely helpful. Two of the roads I'd like to build are the Beech Mountain RR and the Fairport, Painesville, and Eastern. Both are short and won't require heavy detail, but the topography of both plays into the quality of the route.
