Updating Fort Smith to Heavener

I am working on a project to learn to use the route building tools. I am updating the graphics to the Allaboard Fort Smith to Heavener route. I am using Soldier Summit for the track rules. I have no idea how long it will take me to finish this route, so please be patient and not bug me about when this will be done. I am taking a full load of classes working on my Bachelor's, so studies will be my priority. I have felt that this route needed to be updated as the trees look very flat, the tracks could use some touching up, get rid of some of the outdated rolling stock, and make it single track to replicate the real life KCS Fort Smith dodger line. I still have a lot to learn, but I have started by replacing track, road, and crossings in Van Buren at the north end of the route. Here is what I have done so far. I am thinking about adding Peninsula Corridor for the gantries and rail crossings.

I have replaced all the track north of the Arkansas River in Van Buren, AR. I am trying to figure out how to use automatic switches on the mainlines and manual ones in the yards. Not sure if switches are tied to a track type or how that works. I also still have to complete the signalling before moving southward across the river into Ft. Smith. There won't be too much updating for awhile as I will be traveling the next month for Christmas.

When you are in the loft tab go down to the bottom left fly-out box and there should be a manual/automatic switch option inside.

Thanks for the tip. Now I have learned how to map signals and change switch types. Should make this route a lot better. Dispatch will control mainline switches, and engineers will manually set yard switches.

I have replaced the bridge that crosses the Arkansas River with the larger 50m trusses that are part of the Soldier Summit assets. I am currently working on the signaling in the Van Buren, AR yards and lines. I found the tutorial videos that were recommended to me in another post, but I am having some issues with the multiple head signals. If anyone knows of any good tutorials on multiple head, multiple rail signals, I would appreciate it.

Look up a guy called CactusJuice on YouTube. There is a pretty good tutorial on signals which might help you. !!*ok*!!

Check the Learning Center on the web site. Under Tutorials/Route Construction. Good Signal tutorials by Tim McIntosh.

Have you approached Richard Garber yet for permission to distribute any of his Payware route when you have finalised it. Rich left our Railsimming community quite awhile ago, no doubt he is enjoying his retirement fishing somewhere, may I suggest that you sound him out on your project beforehand.

Like I said in my OP, I am mostly using this as a way to familiarize myself with the editing tools and route building skills. I am not sure if I will ever finish the project or how long it will take me. I will do my best to finish it, and before releasing it get permission from Richard Garber.

I don't speak for Rich, but I have my doubts he'll allow his route(s) or any of their assets to be released.

Sorry, maybe I should have rephrased my post above to have been a bit more blunt. Rich is well known to the community on here, as Hack and I know him only too well. I highly doubt he will give you permission to allow distribution to a wider audience, I just want to advise you that several weeks, or, even month's work, might be in vain if you wanted to share your project with us, that was all.
I appreciate that you are learning how to use the tools, and I applaud you and wish you well, however, maybe using another route, that wasn't 3rd party Payware, with less restrictions with copyright, and other legalitites, might be the order of the day, if you wanted to share your endeavours with us all.

Cheerz. Steve.

Now that I understand the concepts of track laying and signalling, I would rebuild and expand the map myself if I was skilled enough at finding all the DEM data and getting it imported. I have linked my Train Sim program to Google Maps, so knowing where to lay track wouldn't be an issue. Although there are some custom assets that Rich is using, especially around the Whirlpool plant that is going to be impossible to replicate.

I think that you should study more -- copyright and personal property law, for example; not to mention respect.

Let me clarify, I was not intending to use Rich Garber's assets without his permission on a route remake. I was saying that there are some buildings around the Whirlpool plant that I do not have the skills to remake. Since they are not standard, I cannot use a DLC for the assets. Again, I was not intending to violate anyone's copyright and personal property laws.
