Google overlay doesn't show anything

Unread postby ssbobz » Mon Feb 20, 2017 9:50 am

I've created an API and entered it on the google option in TS, when I go into the world editor and hit ctrl+g I get the blue circles and the 2017 google copyright displayed but no actual map or satellite view. What step have I missed?

The api file is very hard to get right since their lettering font is not very clear. I suggest you take that thing and copy and paste it into like notepad so you can sure you have all the ones and els and zeros and 'O's correct. Usually if you get the spinning circles you don't have one of more of these numbers/letters correct.

The api key is 39 characters long, does that sound about right? And it's a static map api, is that the correct one to use?

Does the key automatically link the overlay to the coordinates in the route or do I have to set up a map for it to look at?

The circles only spin for a few seconds before the copyright labels come up. When I changed it to satellite from hybrid it said no imagery available for the area but I know the regular google map does. I'm looking north of Atlanta.

The is a little menu that pops out near the bottom right corner of your screen that has your options for the Google map overlay. I can see it in the picture you posted. Move your mouse over it to bring it out, then check your transparency setting.

I've moved it from one side to the other but it never shows anything useful, just a lighter or darker background.

Something must be off in the settings, as I tested the Google overlay in a few areas on my end before sending the terrain over.

That your 'blue circles' aren't spinning indefinitely means that you have correctly entered the API key into Railworks. I can double check my API settings when I get home, but at first glance everything you have listed looks correct.

I used this guide https://train-simulator.com/getting-the ... tegration/ to get started

I've generated a static maps api key but I can't figure out how to generate the Browser key mentioned here

On the APIs console, you need to activate the Static Maps API Service (this will then show ‘On’). Your key can then be generated: in the Simple API Access section, select the Create Browser Key option and a long alpha-numeric key will be generated. Once you have this, copy it to your Windows clipboard.

The google developers console has changed a fair bit since that tutorial was written. Below are a few pics which might help you.

I tried different settings and now I'm seeing, "sorry we have no imagery here".

Doesn't it all come from the same map we can see on google maps? I know they have imagery, I studied the area quite a bit.

Yes, the overlay is the same map imagery used for Google Earth and Google maps. Can you take a screenshot of that message saying they" have no imagery here"?

I was wondering if you had setup the account recently? When I did mine it didn't take right away and I had to wait a few days for the overlay to display properly. But, I had the continuous blue circles. It may be an association thing where the TS program and the Google program aren't talking properly. You have the copyright showing but no images, the transparency sliders won't help as when you adjust it the whole image and copyright go transparent at the same time. The play/pause and the height buttons have little to do with producing the image, they either stop and start the flow of info, or place the overlay at a different height. So, it has to be either a connection problem or the way the two program are attempting to talk to one another.

I suggest waiting a few days and see what gives. And, whatever you do, don't over complicate things it just makes a mess of it all.

I set up the api earlier in the day. Here is what I see now:

Did you try it in a location where you are sure there is imagery like over Chicago?

I have not, would I do that by starting a new route and inputting the coordinates there?
