Sacramento Northern, South End question

Unread postby SooLine2714 » Thu Jan 19, 2017 8:59 pm

Hi there! I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a little pickle I am in. I want to make a free roam for the Sacramento Northern, but I don't know what cars to put in what sidings at the stations. I want to make this free roam as operationally interesting as possible, so I want to make a realistic freight consist for a steeplecab to start off with, and then have the correct types of cars in the sidings along the route for the train to switch out. Can anyone help me?

Running the included scenarios, especially the SN Tour series, should give you ideas, but remember that scenario writing requires imagination as well as research. One of the challenges involved in writing freight scenarios for this route is that in the early years (see users' manual) freight could only move at night. Since placing rolling stock and track markers in the dark is very difficult, let me suggest working out your scenario at a daytime hour -- the default is always noon -- and setting the clock (both in the scenario marker's fly-out and for each train) to a night hour only after everything is operating to your satisfaction.

Enjoy!

I am no stranger at free roams, as I have made one for most of the routes I have. If you look at my Steam Workshop, all I have is free roams. Most of the free roams on the routes in Train Sim, I find them lacking. You are plopped down at a station with selection of trains, and then after you leave the siding it is like a ghost town. No other cars in industry sidings, no other trains, etc. Then it is basically a quick drive where you can control the switches. To me, a Free Roam means that you are able to go out and do whatever the heck you want on the route, be it switching or running an express train.
Also, I plan on making the scenario set in the early morning because my personal computer cannot handle anything other than the lowest of graphics settings, and Dynamic Lighting has to be off so night operations are horrible for me. I'll just fudge it and say the bridge is undergoing repairs or something, so they are providing daytime freight service.
Thirdly, I realize that playing the scenarios would help, but I don't have a lot of time on my hands to play.
