Learning to create routes

Unread postby wlenz781 » Tue Jan 10, 2017 3:26 pm

Where would I find the best tutorials on how to learn to create some routes? I have some ideas of routes I want to create, but have never done it before. I need some guidance in where to start and how to accomplish my goals.

Look in the RWA file library for tutorials, at train-sim.com, and on youtube you'll find loads of tutorials on route building.

Best thing to do, I think, when just starting, is simply go into TS17, choose 'Build' from the main menu, and create a new route from scratch. Then in that new blank route, start exploring the various editor features, examining the left and right 'flyout' menus, trying some track-laying, painting ground cover, placing and orienting structures and objects, raising and lowering terrain, and so forth.

First i hope you know what your getting into. All i do is design routes and even a small one can take a few months to do scenery and texturing by a single person.
Sometimes i wish someone would help me but a lot of people are busy with their own projects. And as stated before they take FOREVER **!!bang!!**

I am close to finishing my second major route. The NERW was first and that was 2400 man hours. The Lafayette has been over 2 years now. I had/have other people helping me on both of them. Both routes are a little larger than 50 miles. Laying the track is the easy part. Adding DEM was also easy. Painting 50 miles of the route and planting millions of trees, took the time.

Texturing is by far the longest task it is also pretty boring. I wish you could import textures. My personal favorite partof route biulding is putting in senery spesificly bridges.

Thanks for all the great info guys. I am currently having to replace the hard drive in my computer and will have to reinstall Train Simulator and all my content. My goal was to create a small route for the San Francisco Belt Railway. It is a small railway that would tie into the Peninsula Corridor and provide switching along the San Francisco Bay ports. I would even create a repaint of their Alco S2 locomotives to add to the realism. Maybe once I get my computer back in working order. I will look through the tutorials and figure out how it all works.

I have heard of the San Francisco Belt Railway. That would be really nice to have in TS. The Alameda Belt Line would be another great idea also.

Especially if we could merge both of these short lines into the Peninsula Corridor, that would be awesome.
