Is this terrain for a real world location? I can knock out DEM / SRTM terrain pretty fast if yes.

There are several threads about how to do this with pictures and directions here in the forum. There is an excellent tutorial by bnsfsubdivision. That is what I first used. Getting basic 1 arc second terrain in the game using this tutorial shouldn't take you any longer than an hour for a very large area.

If you aren't modelling a real location, and still want to avoid SRTM/DEM terrain then you would be making your terrain using the tools in the editor, starting from a 'flat world'. This might seem easier at first, but is a complete pain in the butt to create grades and scenery on anything but very flat, and small route.

If you want to model something along the coast pick an area and have him make the terrain for you and then build your railroad around it.
