Huge gaps and missing tiles for terrain

Unread postby D68js » Thu Dec 11, 2014 8:47 pm

Hello everyone.

After a very long break from TS due to a busy semester, I was finally able to sit back down and begin working on my route again. I had left off at importing terrain. For some reason after processing the terrain data through ReDEM and putting it into TS, I am getting these very long gaps and entire missing tiles as can be seen here:

I have tried re-processing the .BIL files through ReDEM to no avail. I also double checked and according to the National Map site all the terrain I downloaded is 1/9 arc second. I have found a few previous posts on this same problem but none have helped me so far.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Joe

What is your distance between your marker files? I had the same issue because mine were too far apart. I regenerated my terrain in Redem with more markers (shorter distance between markers) and fixed it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will go back and add more markers this afternoon and let you know how it goes.

Combining the bil files into one Dem in Microdem solved that for me.

Is combining the .bil files into one a straightforward process? If so, I may try that first since adding more markers will be a fair amount of work.

All the bils have to be in the same folder is the only part Microdem doesn't tell you.

Just use "Open and Merge" and CTRL-Click on them.

It is easy.

When I try to open and merge I get an "Out of memory" error. Does this mean that I am trying to merge too much terrain. (For reference the terrain I need is for the most part the populated areas of Summit and Stark counties in OH)

Yes and therefore you'll need QGIS (freeware) http://www.qgis.org/en/site/ Once you've downloaded it, follow up this tutorial: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=11218&view=unread

I was about to try QGIS (I have in the past), but tried the 64-bit version of MicroDEM and that seemed to work; however when I loaded up the terrain generated, it formed HUGE spikes all around. My terrain is nothing but spikes. Did I do something wrong or is it a problem with the merged MicroDEM file? I have a hunch it is the merged MicroDEM file because when MicroDEM was done merging this is what it showed:

Import it into QGIS to check it through that.

Upon first inspection it seems that merging in QGIS fixed it! I will have to take some time and inspect all the terrain, but thanks for your help everyone! If all goes well, maybe I can have some early teaser shots up towards the end of next week.
