Discussion about RailWorks route design.

San Diego & Arizona

Unread postby UnionPacific2748 » Sun Jul 13, 2014 1:11 am

Hey folks, so I've been a member around here for a little while, and have been messing around in Railworks for a couple weeks. Being from Southern California and angling for a challenge, I gained what I thought would be "proficient" knowledge of the RW editor and plunged into building John D. Spreckel's "Impossible Railroad", the San Diego & Arizona. As of this week I've got rail from the yard and junction with the MTS Blue Line at San Ysidro to El Centro, a distance of 150 miles and a labor of around a month.

Anyway, that being said, here's what you might call a "best of" my work thus far:

Image
This first shot is taken south of the border in Tijuana Canyon. 44 miles of the route are in Mexico, between San Ysidro and Division/Lindero.

Image
An overview of the Pacific Southwest Rail Museum's yard at Campo. PSRM runs trains along eight miles of the SD&A, up to Miller's Creek. Since this screenshot was taken I've applied new ground textures and more fitting track assets, although I'm still searching for a good set of sheds. Making 'em myself and tossing 'em up here on RWA might be a sound proposition, too...hmm...

Image
Between Miller's Creek and Hipass, the line crossed Campo Creek on a soaring steel viaduct, visible from Highway 94.

Image
Finally, the famous Carrizo Gorge. I haven't done much in the way of scenery work in the gorge, but just terrain, track, and desert ground textures tell enough of the story. Also, I'll get to the famous stuff in another post, when I've got it up to snuff and looking like the prototype, so stay tuned!

I think someone in MSTS made a pretty good version of this. Many moons ago.
Your route looks sharp so far. !!*ok*!!
Check out the real thing.

Hi,

Thanks for the WIP screenshots, this is a fascinating railroad you chose for your model. I still remember the MSTS version, but that was indeed a looong time ago that it was built. It'll be great to see this unique railroad line in the vastly powerful graphics environment of RW.

Cheers
