Hello everyone. I am a first time poster on these forums and I come to you with a problem I cannot seem to resolve. Recently I decided to attempt to create a half real, half fictional route. Logically it seemed like loading terrain into the sim would be the best place to start. I began by following the tutorial from this thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=6151&start=90. I get to the last step where you are supposed to load the data into the sim. I use the settings in the tutorial (SRTM, 19x19) and click ok, the sim "pauses" for about 30 seconds like its loading and then the box disappears and nothing was loaded.

I am 99% sure my coordiantes are correct because when I enable the google maps overlay it is spot on in the correct position.

I would appreciate any help as I have been trying to get it to work for a day and a half now.

I assume you got output files like "N40W112.hgt" etc. Try it with those direct .hgt files http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/ ... h_America/ and retry the import process. All you got to do now is to download the right ones by looking at those generated by BILxSRTM. Tell us whether this will work.

That did work, but now my route marker is sitting on top of a black wasteland and my terrain is a goo way above the route marker. Is this normal and will it affect my route at all?

It won't affect anything. Just move up until you hit the actual ground and set up a new marker. Once placed you're good to go.

Can I get one of you who know what you are doing to load up either Key West N24.5556W81.7812 or Homestead FL W25.46872W80.47756 and see if it shows any terrain. I know these are only a few feet above sea level but I'm just showing 0.0.

I'm currently having a problem with getting BILxSRTM to convert the .bil files. I followed the tutorial exactly, and I open BILxSRTM and find the path to the files and click start and I get "Looking for BIL Data" and "Done" to pop up. Nothing in between, and no .hgt files either. I did download the USGS .hgt files from two various places and neither seemed to work properly. I get to a certain point and it drops off. I try to import and my game crashes.

I'd suggest you try QGIS and turn your BIL that way into hgt files. http://www.qgis.org/en/site/

I've downloaded QGIS. That's as far as I've gotten, mainly because there are so many functions to it and I have no idea how to import my BIL files to export them as hgt files...

This should help you.

I appreciate this, as it is MUCH farther than I ever got before. However, after entering the directory and naming the file, I left everything else alone, and hit OK, where the following message popped up:

Format driver SRTMHGT does not support creation and piecewise writing.
Please select a format that does, such as GTiff (the default) or HFA (Erdas Imagine).

So I feel like I'd have to find a format that SRTMHGT would support, and then convert BIL to that, then that to hgt. I assume. I'll mess around with it. I hope doing that won't alter the files much though. I don't imagine it would, but regardless, I'm headed in a direction. Not sure which, so we'll assume it's a forward direction.

So I tried to set the output to the GeoTIFF type, and ended up with this message:

ERROR 4: `C:/Users/Trevor/Downloads/Files/N.IL DEM Schtuff/map1.BIL' not recognised as a supported file format.

Soooo it looks like I'm stuck again. I'm not sure while the map1.BIL isn't supported, because it's a BIL file. Everything in that folder are BIL files except the BILxSRTM Application.

Try redownloading your files in the (.img) format as that always did the trick for me without any issues.

I have been downloading from the Earth Explorer, and, at least under the digital elevation, I don't see a download option for any type of image file. I did merge the file in MicroDEM to a jpeg, but QGIS game me the same error when trying to merge that file to a .hgt type.
