Route Building Help for a Newb

Unread postby Jib228 » Sat Nov 16, 2013 11:04 am

Ok, so before I decided to ask I did as much searching as possible. I have read and followed every tutorial I have found so far. These are the ones I've read:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2061
http://www.rstools.info/tutorials/Marker_Tutorial.pdf
And I've read Search Light Simulations DEM Tutorial.

But so far have had no luck getting any thing out side of the Google Earth over lay to work. I cant get my route markers in and I cant get any DEM elevation to show up.

Ive been using RW Tools to import files and not getting any errors. I made all the folders for my developer. Ive cleared the Chache. I've used the Blue box with orange arrow thing to select my providers in game. I've checked the "Show Markers" icon in the lower right window. But no matter what I do, I cant see my route markers when I click on the coups up top. It all ways shows the once for Cajon, even though I'm on my own template.

I'm thinking there is some thing I am missing or just not doing right. Or maybe the game has changed and the tutorial's haven't updated. Or maybe I need to stand on my head while throwing a goat into a volcano during a full moon while chanting some ancient incantation. **!!bang!!**

Thanks for any help in advance.

I would suggest you go through every step again and take some more time reading it as people often tend to overread things accidentally.

Ive read through them several times. Ive been at this for about 2 days now.

I did a "Verify Cache" and that got my route marker's showing up. But still no luck on the DEM elevations.

If someone wre to write a definitive tutorial on this, I would like to add it to our tutorials section on the web site.
Seems this question comes up often.

The ones I have found are well written, so its not a bad idea.

Question though, when oping up the .flt file(s) in McroDEM, it asks if I was to save as 16 bit integers. I can hit YES and it loads then Dem, or I can hit No and it loads. Does it matter?

It doesn't matter whether you hit Yes or No. What exactly are your problems? Like. Do have trouble setting up ReDem or anything else?

I'm not using ReDEM, I'm using MicroDEM.

I do every thing exactly as your guide says. When I go to my location in game and I hit "Import DEM" with the right folders selected, the ground flickers, and then nothing. No elevations, nothing. At first I thought it was be cause I was just in too flat of an area to really notice any elevations. So I moved to the mountains hoping to notice more change.

Ive put every thing that Bilxsrtm.exe, all the .hgt files, made right into SteamApps\common\railworks\DEM\SRTM just as you said.

Make sure that your route starting coordinates are right in your Route Template and that they match the real world coordinates from google earth. Also. Make sure that the coordinate settings in GE are set to Decimal Degrees. They are located under Tools/Options.

They do and they are.

Ive got a route marker that I set in Google Earth that is right at the route location. This happens to be the middle of the DEM I downloaded, and on the side of a hill.

My markers location, according to Google, is: LAT 35.943683 LON -115.217213. In sim I put that in as my start location, load up the Google Overlay and see the exact spot in Google where I want to start. I then use the terrain tools to import the DEM's, but as I said, the ground flash's and then nothing.

Yea...cant get REDEM to work ether.

It keep saying out of range on every thing, even if the DEM tile I have is the same as my start location.

It does this only when you're route markers extend the DEM area and even if it does, let it generate the other tiles anyway.

It wouldn't generate any tiles. But I think i figured it out.

When using Bilxsrtm.exe, I tried setting it to out put at 1 Arc Second rather then 1/3 Arc Second. That gave me a few files that seems to work. I now have elevations on my test route.

I'm having a little trouble, hoping someone knows what's wrong. I'm following the Searchlight Tutorial above and when it comes to converting the .kmz files to .DCSV it won't let me.

Here's what happens:
I go into Route Building Tools>Marker Files>Convert Direct to DCSV
Select my route marker file
Hit "Proceed"
When it asks me to select the files to convert, nothing shows up unless I remove the .csv extension.
I then hit "Select All" and "Convert Fully" but get the error message: "You have not selected a .kml,.wpt.mkr.csv or .gpx file?"

Any ideas why this happens?

Also on a side note, the New Template creator at the begining of the tutorial ran fine but it wasn't selectable when I opened RW. Idk if that's part of the problem but I figured I'd mention it.

Run RWTools as an administrator and it should convert the files properly.

Ran as Administrator and I'm still getting the same error. Nothing is selectable until I remove ".csv" from the box above (*.kml;*.gpx;*.wpt;*.mkr;*.csv) and if I accidentally delete the asterix it crashes. Should I just re-install?
