Hi,

Thanks for reviving this thread! !!*ok*!!

Hey, would anybody be interested in getting the ball rolling with the RWA route and lay the very first tracks?

What do you say about this terrain?
Image

The area highlighted in orange might be able to meet everybody's demands: it has some mountains, some twisting canyons, some gentle slopes and rolling terrain, and also quite a lot of more or less level terrain to build larger yards and cities on.

I would be happy to (Re)DEM this terrain in hi-res and then send it to who ever wants to begin building the route.

What do you say?

Cheers,
Michael

Looks interesting. What will be the plans? Single mainline? What kind of industries are you looking at?

The terrain reminds me of the B&O's West End (CSX Mountain Sub), with Cheat River grade on the left, and Cranberry grade on the right. :D
Cheers!

that terrain looks like there will be lots of room for small operations deep in the mountain like mines and logging caps and such! plus the good area for a higher speed mainline if people want along with flat and mountanus terrain is just a great option! the only thing thats missing at this point is some lakes. to add some interest to operations it could be possible for the person who starts to start at the very edge of the dem and use that edge to produce a large seaport for intermodual.

well i do like the look of this one!

I say that terrain is spot on! Looks like a lot of things could be made.

Cool! I take it your responses mean "aaall abooooaard!" then. !*salute*! I just discovered I still have the all the dem data from an earlier, experimental project so the terrain extraction should go quick. Here's hoping RW3 and ReDem will work together.

BTW, Marc, your guess came close, the B&O did exist in the area pictured -- it's Pittsburgh and the valleys of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio.

THANKS GUYS!!!

I'm really, really looking forward to this project. And pretty excited about what ideas people might have when building the R&WA.

They do work together. I DEM'd some terrain for the Pocahontas a few days ago and it works fine.

As I looked at that I thought "Gee it looks like the 3 rivers in Pittsburgh" I live 20 miles north of it in Beaver.

You can loosely base the route by the Allegheny Valley Railroad, which uses most of that terrain and Bob, I grew up 10 miles south of there in Bethel park.
!!*ok*!!
Can I make some suggestions;
Having the river close by Have a bulk transfer facility similiar to this;
http://www.tstarinc.com/union/urr/index.htm
Where coal and commodities can be transfered by barge to the railroad and so fourth.
Another suggestion;
Folks maybe into large steel mills and blast furnaces but to keep it simple, companies like Allegheny Technologies exists close by producting commodies like Stainless Steel and Titanium metals where a overly huge blast furnace would not be needed but adds industry;
http://www.alleghenyludlum.com/pages/fa ... bagdad.asp
Where only a few tracks and sidings would be needed to service the facility and the buildings set up like this keeps things simple.

I wished I had the abilities to make routes I would jump in and help. I will help by suggestions and testing.

it seems everybody is forgeting that this is just dem that is just for scenery, and not an actual replica. R&WA never existed, nor did this route ever actually exist. !**duh*!!

maby some people should read the first post again to see what we are actually doing again lol! !DUH!

although this keeps me entertained for the time being......

Need an initial track layer? I have the materials and tools. *!lol!*

I imagine this might go further than just this one route, so how about naming the dev folder RWA01? Keep it small and manageable, and once completed, begin on RWA02, etc. :D
Cheers!
