I know how to use it and have found that it is rather fun! As for the steep learning curve, I found it to be minimal if existent at all. You can learn it in a half an hour! Check out these tutorials. All you need is to download Blender, install it and follow the video tutorials in the link. Once you're done with number 1 just move on through the series.

How do I export an item in Blender to railworks? I can't find the plug-in, and the video tutorial is for an old version.

I used this plugin downloaded from the UKTrainSim file library:
Blender IA/IGS exporter 2.1 [16982212 bytes] - Blender_IA-IGS_Exporter_V2.1.71.zip
File ID: 25903 Date: 07 May 2011 - 979 Downloads

I was using Blender 2.49b.
There is also a newer exporter that works with Blender 2.63.
Easy to find using Google, or in the UKTrainSim forums
