I had this error, too. But I don't know how I solved it.

Maybe you could send me your ".kml" file via mail (I send you a PM).
I'll try to check it. !*salute*!

Hi all,

TheCanadianRail sent me his .kml file and RW_Tools converted it in about 30 secs.

Possible problems were that the .kml file had a massively long file name including brackets and it is possible that the DOS routine used in the conversion routine did not like that.

Also I suspect RW_Tools were not being run with Administrators Rights.

It's no problem to use more than the 2 tiles he suggests.
It depends on the type of route you develop.
It's also not necessary to do a path you can also use single markers.
And combining the different downloads is no problem.
I did it for my Feather River Canyon route and had no problems.

Hi Michael,

Interesting that you say that you managed to combine 2 different routes. Many people on uktrainsim have been trying to do that since the inception of RailSimulator and it simply does not work unless both routes are created using the same Start Point.

The reason being that the tiles of a route you create are based on that Start Point which is at the bottom left hand corner of the tile 000000+000000.bin so if you try to merge 2 routes the tiles on the 2nd route are offset from those on the first route and strange alignment of terrain occurs?

well i got a wierd problem, i got ReDem to load some of the tiles but the ones that didn't load are basically slots 1 tile wide and multiple long between tiles that loaded. should i try to re-download the tiles in ReDem?

nevermind, i just remembered that i have the freeware of ReDem so only the southern half of the tile is there, the landscape is breathtaking for what is there!

I just got into RW myself, and instantly wanted to create a route that resembles a fictional model rr I'd like to create (fictional because its 350km IRL, still 2500m of scaled rail in N)

Anyways long story short and many google searches have lead me to this site and this thread exactly. Seem I was having the same error as thecanadianrail was and it took me all day to figure out what I was doing wrong in rwtools trying to convert my GE kml file.

All I have to say for myself is read the popup box before the dialog box opens :)

1st ones says: "Select the folder where you wish to SAVE your Marker files. Usually the RouteMarker folders of your Source Then click Proceed" <-- This is what I was messing up over and over, I was under the impression rwtools could just convert the file in place and as such selected the same temp folder that I had my kml file in and was assuming I'd have to copy it to some special RW folder after, well no dice error everytime. It would create a csv file and it would be in my temp folder where I told it, but it would be 0bytes, empty. Had to click through to \Railworks 2\Source\RouteMarkers\ and then click proceed. And if for some reason after you click proceed it didnt copy the location over to the box entitled "Save In" just copy/paste it yourself. After this I then selected my kml file from the temp folder and after hitting process it magically worked.

Its a long drawn out explanation of 1 step from the 2nd post in this thread but 3mins reading this could save some people hours/days of frustration, I only wish I figured it out sooner as I used up about 8 of my rwtools sessions before getting it right, oh well looks like a good program I'll probably buy it. Bought ReDem and just waiting for a key to be emailed to me before I can continue down the list in the 2nd post, hope it works :)

Welcome to RWA. !*cheers*!
The most imprtant thing is to click "Exit" on the window after succesful creation of the file.
If you don't do so, all progress will be deleted. !**duh*!!

Great thread, now my question. Take a look at the attached picture. What I would like to do is build this in three phases and use ReDEM to generate the terrain. Originally I was going to set my route start location as indicated down by Tabor on the T&N. But, if I started in Malvern, the center of these railroads, setting my start location where the T&N, Wabash, and pre-1902 CB&Q all meet would that work? That way when I run ReDEM using marker files radiating from the hub I should be able to generate terrain files in all the directions I need, correct?

I guess there is only one way to find out, huh, dive in and start.

I have already done something similar, but there are some odd side affects...

So when I started my route I had a single Google Earth path that followed the main line. I did my ReDem thinking I that I picked up enough of an area to get terrain for place that was not on the path... well it almost made it. I decided to try to add to the terrain so I created the new path in Google Earth of just the part I needed off of the original path and ReDem again. I placed the new BIN files over the old, and kept any originals (or so I thought) and the end result was that it did indeed add to the route.

The so I thought part is something I found the other day. I was adjusting track in the western most edge of the route and found that the ground fell out to 0'. It was not a big section, may be one or two tiles, so there is probably a BIN file that was overwritten, or was dependent on another BIN, or was just removed somehow. I am still looking into it, but the moral of the story is that you can do it, but be on the look out for side affects.

This gap can also appear if you had to download 2 or more datasets from the USGS servers. Then a gap of about 1 tile will occur on the border in between these areas.
The only two methods to fill it is to do it manually with the Editor or a lot easier with the T key method.

How about this, what if I use the Wabash line as my path, and set ReDEM to generate 16 tiles on either side. That should give me what I need to run my T&N line, as well as a chunk of the CB&Q east-west.
