Central Jersey Freight Lines (The Lehigh Line Project)

Unread postby xxuntitledxx » Tue Jun 25, 2013 5:43 pm

Hi all,

This is my first post here on the RWA forums. I've been following the forums for a while and finally decided to join (haha). So I'd like to say hi everyone!

Anyway... down to the nitty gritty.

I'm trying to do the Lehigh Line/ Conrail Shared Assets from Oak Island Yard in NJ to Bethlehem, PA. I have all the markers and main line route path in google earth and i have imported them into my developer folder. I am not however able to get them into the route. Also, I seem to have found out that the National Map for the usgs doesn't seem to be offering BIL_16INT files anymore especially for 1/9 ARC data files. Anyone have any idea of what to do? I am using RW Tools and ReDEM to do the bulk of the route creation. Eventually I'll be using RW_Decals once I have the lay of the land (litterally) down.

So does anyone have any tips or tricks in how to deal with the new issues that arose in the past couple days?

I'll be happy to send you screenshots/whatever if I am not completely clear.

Thanks in advance,

Ken

Welcome aboard, Ken. Wish I could help with your issue but Route Building is not my area. Keep at it. Would love to have your route one day.

Haha thanks, at this rate I would love to have my route too... I've gotten this thing laid out in detail but no way to get it to work *!sad!* . I'm a bit frustrated... I got it working once before and had to delete it. I might have to start from scratch all over again... For the 3rd time...

Just wait, there are a few here who know what they are doing when it comes to route building. I wish I could help out.

It's okay, I'm just trying one thing at a time... hopefully something clicks... I know the line like the back of my hand so once I get the DEM and the decals in... things should come together quickly... I'm also going to be riding on the line in August, so I'll see everything from the tracks too. :D

As for the terrain, I would suppose you to take a look into this thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=6151&start=90 It coveres everything you have to know about importing DEM's as of the new April release of NED data from the USGS. There's also a link for a tutorial on how to obtain the data and how to import it in game.

Assuming you have hgt files in the correct folder in the Railworks directory, do this -

1. Go into the world editor, select the brush tool from the box at the top left of the screen

2. Select the green icon which is in the third row down.

3. A box should open up. It will allow you to select from GDEM or SRTM. Select SRTM, and select an option from the list on the left, which will define the tiled area you want terrain generated for.

4. Wait a few seconds for it to generate. You may have move the camera upwards to get above ground level again if you are in an area of high elevation.

The files are in C:\Program Files(x86)\steam\steamapps\common\railworks\DEM\SRTM

I did the steps you said and still nothing... I've used it before and it worked... But for some reason it's not taking any of the hgt files I converted from the BIL. I checked the hgt files in MicroDEM and it showed elevation (at least I think) but Train Sim isn't taking the elevation... I used a 1/3 Arc flt file to do the BIL creation as a 1/3 Arc BIL then converted the BIL to hgt... I'm going to try it again today at some point and hopefully it takes. I'll keep everyone posted.

You sure you long and lat are correct? When I first started and used SRTM I used the lats and longs of the SRTM and it ended up in EUrope somewhere. One of the values needs to be negative. This is an unwritten thing, but I forget which needs to be negative. That was over 2 years ago. If you can look at the NERW route and see which value is negative, your should be also, unless you are working in Europe.

I'm using Latitude N 40.693810 and Longitude W -74.108714 as my beginning point based on my marker in Google Earth. so i know the markers and all of the paths are correct in Train Sim. I've been following the path across the flat terrain... I just don't know if there was something wrong in how I opened the flt file from the USGS I know i told it to not open in 16Bit when I opened the file in MicroDEM. Is that where i went wrong? The directions in the tutorial bnsf subdivision provided weren't clear as to how to open the flt file and save the BIL... I'm guessing I might have missing data or my download was corrupt? I'll try re-downloading the files from USGS again and see if that changes things.

I'm kind of stuck at a standstill with my DEM not working... I posted in the ReDEM thread, and I'm still waiting on some help converting IMG files to BIL files. Any help?

Thanks,

Ken

If the IMG to bil does not work on your site, then try to download your dem's in the "GridFloat" format and convert them through microdem.

I downloaded them in GridFloat from the USGS National Map and tried converting them with the IMG 2 BIL .bat file they had that you suggested in the other thread. It made the folder but no files got converted inside it. How would I use Microdem to convert the img to bil? Does it convert in microdem or do I need to use the .bat file? Does microdem convert directly from img to hgt? I hope once I get this little elevation issue under wraps I should be able to start laying decals and getting some stuff down, I'm hoping to get progression picks up in the next few weeks. I'll be riding the route in August, so hopefully I'll really get some detail haha.

Thanks in advance.
