Adding / changing water/river textures in an existing route

Unread postby ozinoz » Wed Jan 02, 2013 10:20 pm

After the debacle of the CabForward rollingstock sound upgrade, I thought I might ask the questions of people who might know before I blunder in and break it completely. *!greengrin!*

I am currently tweaking a copy of Tori's wonderful COA route. I have swapped out some buildings, placed clutter, swapped vehicles from the HSC 50's route and thought I would look at tweaking the river water textures and wondered just what was involved. is it just a matter of select > delete > and place new or is it more complex? I am then going to start looking at trees for the Greenbrier branch...

I have looked about but cant really find anything that covers a "how to"

!*cheers*!

Have you played with the block asset tool? Placing water is much like that, you get a small square of and then stretch it out. If you double click the water tile, it has a properties panel that lets you change color, depth/murkiness and another thing (can't remember). Been a while since I placed water...

Depending on how much you plan on changing, it can be a time consuming process.

The other thing is, the C&O was made a few version back and it might not have the RW3 water in it. CHances are you will have to change it all.

If you double click on the water there is a flyout menu on the left. You can get some nice looking water by reducing the depth and setting a colour appropriate to the environment. Have a play with it.

You should go search the trainsim.com forums.
Otto has done and documented this.

That only works on RW3 water not the earlier versions. He is redoing the C&O and is was not made in RW3.

Thanks for the tips. When it gets a bit cooler I will have a poke about and see, but we are heading for 44C+ today, and the computer room gets the afternoon sun *!sad!*

Couldn't find a thing on TS, they have a really weak search tool and my "Google-Fu" obviously isn't up to snuff either.

COA is an older route and I thought if possible I would update the water to something from the newer palate, just to see...

!*cheers*! (I wish I could get a beer right about now )

You'll get several hits by using the advanced search, using "river" as search word and "OTTODAD" as author.
There's no published method however. Otto used to have a river-changer on his download site, along with a track-changer. They're not there anymore, because of, er, yeah.

Update: it's back on his site:

I suggest you grab it while the going is good.

So there is a change in TS'13 water tiles? Did they create new files for these new assets instead of referencing the same filename/location of the old assets? I haven't looked at the water tile assets in TS'13 yet... do the new ones have a different name? If not, then I'm just replacing the tiles with the same name as the old tile but the file location is different? Screwy sounding to me, that's why I'm asking. Wonder if I can use RWTools to swap them all (???).

Oz, beware that I used two different water assets... tiles for most, but here and there in the river are "rapids" where I used the linear Generic Water asset. This was necessary because the linear objects can be gradient adjusted to fit the slope of the land where it is steeper. Most of my small streams and waterfalls also use the linear water assets.

Just so you know I have replacement Kuju US assets for reflective/non-reflective water (decal) and a resizable water loft. They should be in the next release (v2) of RCAP.

Visually there will be no difference between my work and Kuju US, as there are no parameters to change these models (at least not from the GEO level).

One more thing... my river loft has no embankments, unlike the Kuju US Canal. I had use modeling it this way so I hope other do as well.
