How does 'Line type' work?

Unread postby NDORFN » Thu Jan 03, 2013 4:48 am

Trying to figure out the significance of line type. What effect does line type have on signalling, if any? Is it easier just to designate everything on a route as mainline?

If we are talking about the same thing, I made all my line on the NERW freight including passenger sidings. The AI dispatcher would send freight trains through the station instead of by passing. If I would have changed the platfrom track to Passenger, then the freight trains would not try to go through there. Is that what you mean?

Yes that's what I'm talking about. I figure if everything is mainline then all train types can go everywhere. I just don't know how it wil effect trains in terms of their own type ie. Special, slow speed freight etc...

It only effects frieght or passenger as far as I can tell. Since I made all the track freight on the NERW I had to place destination markers in front of each station, then use a waypoint or go via command to keep the train out of the station. When you are cruising at 55 and get dumped into a station that has a 20 mph speed, it gets crazy.

BTW, line type can be set in the scenario editor. It allows for overriding the line type set at route level. This is useful for making the Dispatcher set the path that you want for a particular scenario.

Sure wish you would have told me that a year ago. Maybe we need to write our own developer's manual..

Actually, Derek did.
*!greengrin!*

Now that you mention it, I've been wanting to propose two ideas for some time, not very original because it's been done on several forums before, but still useful:
1- A forum titled "Information for new players (read this first!)"
This forum would contain threads with subjects such as "How to get the game", "What are add-ons", "Where to get add-ons", "Tutorials", "Manuals", "Historical information", "Troubleshooting", etc.

2- A forum tiled "Information for new authors, builders and editors" (RWA developer's manual)
This forum would contain threads with subjects such as "Getting started", "Manuals", "Tutorials", "Tools", "Tips and tricks", "Sources", etc.

These forum would be for posting information, not for discussion or troubleshooting.

I did a Google search last night and found Derek's posts regarding setting track type in scenario editor and it made up my mind for me to just make everything 'Mainline' in route editor and deal with whatever temp types are needed in scenario editor.

Ndorfn, the only problem with that is then you are making all the would be scenario writers do more work. I just found out today that you can change type in the scenario editor and I havebeen writing them for a few years now. But it is your route. I did what I wanted to on mine, so I can''t fault you for doing it your way on yours. A lot of work goes into these routes and you really don't need nitpickers nagging you.

It's all good. I was always planning to make all the scenarios for the route myself anyway. I'm in contact with the crew from the CCRC and a guy who is an expert on the line and it's operations so I may aswell take advantage of it.
