Rail Simualtor Newbie

Unread postby RaySanders » Sat Mar 07, 2009 2:50 pm

Hello everyone. Sort of new to RS. I have had it for about a year, but have not used it much. There are some names here I recognize from MSTS VRs.

Any ways, I have an idea for a route, know where it starts, ends, the industries it serves, and even have some actual pictures. It will be based on an actual regional railroad with a little less than 300 miles of track between the end points. Just not sure just how to go about starting such a massive project.

Help, ideas, one way or the other are and will be greatly appreciated.

I note you are in Kentucky, I have just started a route that is a little less than 300 miles and starts in Kentucky going south could be same one - Clinchfield !
Which one are you thinking about ?

Yea, I know. I guess I will have to look at the videos some more, and more, and more, and more..............sometimes it just feels like the brain has gone south for vacation and does not want to come back.....

Short answer: yes. Only RW will be supported into the future; it does have some functional and graphical improvements; and you don't want to spend time developing for a sim that is frozen in time while the newer version is updated and extended.

OK. I probably should have been a little more detailed. The reason I was wondering about version 2 is that version 1 did not last very long before hitting the back burner, so to speak. Concerned about longevity here. The 'ole pocket book ain't as deep as it could be (or use to be for that matter), and shelling out 50 bucks or so every year, spending time trying to create something (like a route) just to find that the software is no longer useable after only a year does not particularly appeal to me. Now that could be my problem. Just kinda sorta wondering which way I should go. Hoping that makes at least a little sense.

Ray, I take your point. However I'd still take the leap - I think we should all really regard RS as the beta and RW as the long-term real deal.

FYI and as background info, I would just add that the reasons why version 1 did not last too long before a version 2 came out was mainly due to the contractual relationship with EA, Kuju and F4G, and so the only way RSDL was able to move forward with development was to become RSC.com and publish the version 2 themselves and as a separate product. Now they are free to develop it without strings attached. Rich Garber has posted here on the forum a much more detailed rationale re all this but that is the gist of it. Suffice to say RailWorks is the one to get as it is being developed and improved.

Here's a thread started by Rich that may help to explain things.

Be warned, this was on one of his long-winded days. !*roll-laugh*!
