If your DEM data is in .hgt format, then you either downloaded the wrong type of file from the USGS site (or whichever source you used), or have already converted it from another type. Where are you getting your DEM files from?

You should be downloading 1/3 arc second GRIDFLOAT DEM data. The file type will have a " .flt " extension. (See the picture below for an example.) I strongly recommend using the USGS map viewer ---> http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/viewer/

There is a very well written tutorial by Kevin @ Searchlight Simulations (bnsfsubdivision) to walk you through the process of downloading from there. Once you have the .flt files downloaded, you open them using Microdem, then save them in a .BIL format.

I followed the guide from bnsfsubdivision. I downloaded the GridFloat, converted to BIL in Microdem, and tried to convert it with BILxSRTM. It found the file, a step up from last time, but it did not write a .hgt file for me to use, which is still the same problem I've had from the beginning. Nothing else happened. Then I tried ReDem, since I purchased it, and I'm not quite sure how to get it going. I set my starting location, loaded the .csv file I made, set the bounds to 2 tiles, and loaded the DEM, and it created a bunch of BIN files, which I copied into the terrain folder on my route, but no terrain was changed in the game. I made sure to restart it and nothing happened. I think this is how it's supposed to go, assuming I followed the tutorial correctly. But I'm still stumped.

Once you have the .BIL file that you saved from Microdem, you don't need the BILXSRTM program, unless you are only making 1 arc/second terrain. That .BIL file gets loaded into Redem.

With only a 2 tile radius setting in Redem, you would only be generating a small 'island' of terrain around each if your markers in the .csv file

So would I load the .BIL file into Redem, and set a higher tile radius, and then copy the generated files into the terrain folder for the route, right? The tutorial seemed to point that way, and I'll give it a try again. Would I need to import terrain data, or should it just be there?

Yes, that is correct.

Be certain that the .BIL file you are loading into Redem is for the lat/long grid square that your markers are within.

example, if your 2 marker co-ordinates are:
41.71850, -120.51965
41.63251, -120.53288

Then the .BIL file you are loading should be the one for the N42W121 grid.

The terrain data will just be there when you load the route.

If this is a new route, your starting markers will likely be at 0 elevation, or sea level, so your terrain floor might be well above you depending on the elevation of the route you are working on.

Alright. So just copy the files into the terrain file for the route. That makes sense. I'll give it a try hopefully tomorrow and report back. Thanks for the help!

I'm going in circles for 1/3" data> I have no problem getting the .FLT and .BIL data via MicroDEM. But from there no luck. BILxHGT produces many HGT files with names that RailWorks.exe never even looks for (I used Process Monitor to watch its file accesses).

I'm gonna either need to write a ReDem replacement (and while I'm at it, allow it to take IMG or FLT from USGS) or someone out there ... ReDem is retracted, gone, missing, abandonware ?!?!?!?. If it works, I just wonder why the author walked away from it. I'm dying to get a copy of it, but obviously don't want to violate license agreements or ask anyone else to do the same.

So... is there someone out there would would be willing to run some BIL files through ReDem for me? Maybe 10 or so? I'd be willing to donate...
