Canadian DEM

Discussion about RailWorks route design.

Canadian DEM

Unread postby ilovesd90macs » Sun Feb 28, 2010 6:14 am

Hey all. I am considering trying my hand at building a route for Railworks. It will be in Canada. Problem I'm having is that from what I have found the DEM data is in a different format than The US ones and cannot be recognized by Railworks. Does anybody have any solutions for this or a way to get Canadian DEM that works?

You can use SRTM from USGS - problem is, that the best resolution possible is 30m. You might check out the Zugware forums and see if the Canadian DEM is compatible with ReDEM.

Sorry if this is a year late, but..... For other Canadians looking for DEM data checkout http://www.geobase.ca/geobase/en/find.do?produit=cded click on either of the 2 maps at the top and zoom into your area to get the identifier or range of identifier's you want/need (basicaly a description at to where on the grid of maps you are looking). Then search for them in the first page for links to download (http or ftp) So far it seems like different versions dont matter, as long as you get the total coverage of your area.

Edit: Take those files .DEM and run them through "MicroDem" a free program that will open and patch together your dem files and can save as a .BIL to use with Redem.

Hi! Does anyone know what function to use within MiroDem to convert .dem to .bil files? Options in the tool bar are not obvious to me. Thanks.

Hi Toripony! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. After a lot of trail and error, mostly error, I now have 14 individual .bil files. Anything more I need to do at the point?

OK! Looks like I finally got this thing figured out, so maybe there will be a Canadian route some where in the distant future. Got to finish Sparks/Reno first.
