Is redem considered necessary anymore with the enhancements to TS2014?

Yes, as Redem allows for 1/3rd arc second (10m) and 1/9 arc second (3m) DEM. The best available SRTM data, which RW directly supports, is only 30m and 90m resolution (area dependent).

And the 30m DEM may still cause the editor to crash if you are applying on or near a line of latitude.

Redem also allows you to patch voided or "holey" DEM in Microdem first, before saving as bil data. You would be surprised how much of the NASA DEM even at 30m has considerable voids in the coverage and that's not something which can be easily dealt with from within the actual route editor.

The following page has 30m that won't cause RW to go poof: http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/dem3.html

Note, however, that the data has been downsampled.
