Grab your chance, sound recorders with locomotive cab access, sound mixers, sound mongers, sound moguls, DTG wants your help:

https://forums.dovetailgames.com/thread ... ace.47522/

Apparently they are after traction motor sounds, and those are best heard in the cab?

Yeah, noticed in thread on DTG's board you are in an unfavorable light (pun!).

And they, or their independent subcontractors who do the 3D model, use Youtube as a source of sounds.

Over on the German board, there was a whole discussion over the legality of locomotive sounds recorded in cab, from a railroad platform, from an adjacent public street by actual train drivers, (unallowed) train fans with a recorder in that cab, or ordinary people using their phones from railroad property, or a public platform or a public grade crossing. The arguments went quite ridiculous as to who owns what when it comes to sounds. AFAIK, sounds aren't a piece of music, so no authorship by a composer or musician can be claimed.

The sounds can’t be but the recordings are.

For those who need clarification of what John said here any sounds recorded become that person's property, the recording that person made, the sounds themselves are generally not proprietary. As far as Searchlight is concerned their sounds are so far superior to anything else out there for diesel locomotives there is no comparison. Period. Full stop.
Why DTG doesn't want to utilize is between them and none of our business.

It’s true…SS sounds are what keep me using Train Simulator 20XX for North American freight.

Also would like to see the Searchlight Simulations headlight flares in TSW! The default headlight flares are pathetic.

Correct me if I am wrong. In the past 10 years has DTG asked for high quality sounds from the community before for Train Simulator? Follow up question: If DTG did ask for high quality sounds and received them why didn't they ever use them?
Carry on.

Well there sure is no understanding of what goes on in the community, especially the U.S. section. It is hard to even imagine they have ever used any sounds outside of default sounds since they can't modify their games on stream since that would be misleading. But say they maybe actually tried for just once. That will never happen but I mean say Elphaba asked them to try that at least once and see the difference.

It's good to see DTG taking community initiative. It appears on their forums though that nobody has been willing to work with them on sounds of any kind for this engine.

Some of the comments in this thread are unfortunate. We all know, including DTG, there is a need and desire to improve the quality and range of sounds. And on a number of occasions over time, DTG has reached out both to the railroad industry and to the community for assistance but has had, for various reasons, only limited success. In this regard, considerable success has been achieved on German equipment thanks to a cooperative carrier and here in the states Amtrak has been cooperative. A number of other railroads, for their own reasons, have declined. To its credit, DTG takes seriously issues of copyright and the sourcing of material.

I hope you are not trying to say that the sound that a for instance, since they are one of the dumber railroads,of a BNSF locomotive is propitiatory? That would be a preposterous idea. If one makes a recording it then becomes his property to do what he wishes with it but the person standing next to him has a equal right to make his own recording which then becomes his property. Now if a employee on company time makes a recording there is some room to argue that it might be the company property but even that is very tenuous as long as the employee didn't use company recording devices.
Recordings are subject to copyright laws but the sounds themselves are generally not.
