SP GP-20 on Sale - Worth Buying?

The SP GP-20 is on sale for $9.99.

I'd like to hear what you people think about this engine. The reviews on Steam were positive, which is a big deal, given all the thumbs-down reviews for other DLC.

Thanks,

Rob :D

It is a excellent little locomotive. One of the nicest out there. A pain to re-paint but most fun to drive. One of those that begins with a cold start if you so chose.

The popularity of it on the Steam Workshop is another major important factor.

I love mine, just remember to lash any GP20s up together and then any other locos you want to run. If there is something like a Donner Pass GP9 in the middle of the lashup, then the last GP20 separated from it's kin won't power up with throttle.

I definitely give it a thumbs up.

Something the customers actually like - of course, not of DTG origin.

If you use the GP20 as a helper on the end, I presume the engine won't power up? Just curious here, not a big deal.

BTW, there's a You Tube video of this engine on Donner Pass. The sound was great, assuming it's stock.

Go for it, it's one of my favorites.

It is a really neat engine, and it has inexpensive 'marketplace' BN and UP repaints available too.

It does require a bit more operation in the cab before you are ready to go (isolate and unit selector switches) but nothing too difficult. Also it is the only American loco that can 'overheat' from prolonged use in Run-8. I find this adds to the operating challenge, which I quite enjoy.

Maybe I'll pick it up too in my little shopping time tonight.

I bought this on sale some time ago and almost never use it: I've learned that complicated start-up sequences just don't appeal to me, partly because it's impossible for a scenario writer to know how long it will take a player to start the engine and that makes AI timing practically impossible.

After learning how to start this engine, I made a list of required actions on a post-it note . . . now if I could just keep track of that note I might like this and engines similar to it more. The same goes, in my opinion, for "features" such as workable nose doors. Strangely enough, I don't feel the same about cab windows that open, especially the newer ones that produce a wind sound that varies with the engine's speed, though I can't figure out why an engineer would open a cab window at 80 to 100 mph!

To each his own toys, right?

The SP GP20 DLC includes standard and advanced versions, and allows you to use an "already running" or cold start version as is your personal preference. In my opinion, one of the finest diesels available for TS. Once you have the SP base model, inexpensive BN and UP Marketplace versions are also available.

Buzz is being far too modest, there are a couple of absolutely brilliant repaints by him in the Library, absolutely stonking little engines all 3 of them are, Reppo did a fabulous job of developing them all for us, these are the only GP20s I know of in the game, I wish he'd do some more locos for the community.

Cheerz. ex-railwayman. !!*ok*!!

There is no high hood version that could be repainted into Western Pacific?

We could just repaint the GP9 like that.

My thoughts: Reppo's GP20 is highly advanced and a great deal of fun. It's a very different beast than your typical diesels, but that's what I like about it. It's very well detailed and very well scripted. It's downright fantastic and comes highly recommended from me.
