TS 2016: Turbine Praise (was trouble)

Just out, and a the first glitch has probably been found: the unit numbers and tender number don't match.
First I was running 22 with tender 1, now I am running lead unit 29 with 1B and tender 22 ... Are the numbers supposed to match?

Horn is weak IMO, taken from the default ES44.

But it sure looks awesome. Lots of small details, like working cranks and latches on the opening doors and windows, nice instrument lights and lots of switches and levers everywhere.

Is that in QD? I think there's always been that problem in QD if the numbering list for each vehicle contains more than one number. A quick fix (albeit somewhat tedious) is to edit the QD scenario yourself, change the numbers on the B unit and tender, then press the play button and off you go.

I'll mention this to the devs when I get a chance.

To be fair to Edwin, I found it annoying when the numbers on the loco and tender of the Connie didn't match in QD, so I changed the list to have just one number when I did the upgrade in April. It doesn't stop you from putting other numbers yourself when you edit a scenario, but it makes sure that QD has only one number to choose from automatically.

Yes, it was a QD over Tehachapi, just to look the beast over.

I now run a career scenario and the numbers match.

Buzz, when you see fit, delete this thread, but perhaps open up a TS2016 section.

Jeez, mate. He said it was a bug, not a problem.

So this magnificent piece of railroad history is your work, Mike? **!!bow!!**
Congratulations on a job well done. !*cheers*!

Have you visited one of the preserved examples? For that cab looks very well done, there are three front row seats. I like the remodeled brake "board". A 26L where probably a pedestal model 6 or 8 would have stood.

I only did most of the blueprint set-ups (including the audio blueprints) and all of the scripting. Other people did the visual stuff. I did insist on the brake quadrant being modelled properly, with its detents in the right places :D

Probably one of the more visually detailed cabs I've seen in the game. It's stunning.

Also, neat tidibit - on startup, it flashed an Ambient Temperature reading (and this was in the Scalerail version of Cajon Pass).

That's right. The reason is that the ambient temperature affects the probability of a flame-out when you enter a tunnel (it's more likely on a hot day), so it's useful to know how hot it is outside.

I do hope this becomes available independently.

Is there a PDF available for this thing? While I can move the throttle via the keyboard, attempting to use the mouse and cab view just has it rattle at me.

Also, there's some really neat stuff here. For the train brake, not only do you push it foward (to about 17%), but to fully release it, you then have to push it down into the notch. Not sure I've seen that before, but it's a nice touch.

That's odd. The only thing that should stop the throttle lever from moving is the dynamic brake lever if it's not all the way to the left (the two levers are interlocked, so you can't apply throttle and dynamic brakes at the same time). I can't check it myself at the moment - my copy of TS is busy updating.

The horn is new and is fine, although a bit quiet. What I don't like is that the turbine sound not only does not change as the loco revs up or down, but it does not even have the Doppler effect. Also, the sound does not play when the camera is a certain distance in back of the loco. !*don-know!*

Nice visuals though, and plenty of scenarios for one to enjoy the beast. !!*ok*!!

Once the turbine has been started and run up to normal operating speed, it turns at constant rpm. So you should only hear the revs change when starting or shutting down the turbine. The rest of the time, it's a constant sound.

The way the turbine works is that when the load on the generator windings increases, more torque has to be produced by the turbine to keep the generator turning at the same speed and meeting the demand from the motors (otherwise the load would actually act as a brake, through the electromagnetic fields, that would slow down the generator) - it's just like when you're going up a hill in a car and have to give it more gas to keep the engine rpm steady (assuming you don't change gear, of course). The turbine produces that extra torque by burning more fuel. That's what the GE Speedtronic system does - it automatically regulates the fuel flow to the turbine when the load changes (and the load changes because of conditions and the position of the throttle).

If there's no Doppler effect, it might be that the sounds were recorded as stereo, but I'm pretty sure they're mono, so the Doppler ought to work (I can't test it myself at the moment).
