Review of the Just Trains BR Standard 6mt Clan Class

Unread postby aCup0fBlackTea » Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:36 am

TL;DR: It is not worth it

Price
The price is 20€ which is wayyyyy to high for what you get. Because what you get is a very bad locomotive. 0
Visuals
They are nicely rendered and the locomotive is detailed very well. Nothing to say about that except that there are small black dots on the coupling rods. I could fix that tho, so that's not so bad. +0.5
Simulation
Simulation is very good, it has simple and advanced mode. Almost everything is simulated which is a definite pro. +1
Sounds/Synchronisation
The website and manual say that the chuff sounds are always in sync with the wheels. That is a load of horse. There are about 5 loops which activate/deactivate as soon as the loco reaches a higher/lower speed, and the wheels are mostly not in sync with the chuffs. Reverser/Regulator positions don't affect the volume. I haven't got any wheelslip/wheelskid yet, but as soon as I get it, I will update the review. The whiste is the generic Just Trains 3 chime, nothing new. -0,25
Particles
I won't include this point in future reviews as I've never seen this on any other locomotive. The particles stop emitting for a short time then they emit again. Over and over again. I have noticed this phenomenon only on higher speeds, and I will be notifying the JT team about that. Altough, they probably knew about that, I mean they must have spotted that in the testing phase but decided to ignore that. Also to add, the particles are very much affected by the wind, means we have the "high wind speed bug" on this locomotive. I swear to god, this annoys the crap out of me, I have modified the weather patterns as to have very low to close to no wind speed, and yet these particles are blowing away from the locomotive in almost a 90 degree angle. Definitely not a plus. -0.25
Animations
The animations are (mostly) fluent, except for the eccentric rod. It is not very smooth, it sort of "hiccups" when the wheels have fully turned around. This is very noticeable on lower speeds, it sort of fades out when reaching higher speeds. Almost everything else is animated. +0.5

CONCLUSION
Hands away. Buy the Brit. Much better and is cheaper. Overall score: 1,5/5 disaster

Not to critique your review but I suspect most of us have no idea what asset you are talking about. What on Earth is a JT 6mt Clan?

Probably the British Railways 6MT "Clan" locomotive, modelled by Just Trains, a British developer.

It is. There were only 10 built and they were not particularly successful being a light pacific for Mixed Traffic use (Passenger/Express freight) and 5 were based in Glasgow, Scotland and 5 at Carlisle (for use on the "Port Road" to Stranraer). The Glasgow ones lasted only 12 years, the Carlisle ones only 13/14.

As @mindenjohn said, it is a 4-6-2 light pacific and was/is a part of the British Rail Standardisation plan. JT stands for Just Trains (the developer), 6mt is the locomotive series and Clan is the nickname given to them.

Sometimes us colonials have a tough time keeping track of the Old Country. !*roll-laugh*!

Good job we watch out for you colonials. !*roll-laugh*!

They were named Clans because all 10 were named after Scottish Clans e.g. Clan MacGregor, Clan MacIntosh etc.

Although not in mitigation of any apparent faults that the Clan has, I would point out that the pack was released around June 2014. That means it was probably being modelled between 8 and 9 years ago.

Life and the sim has moved on a long way since then :D
