This is not a WIP/Creation thread... But maybe someone in the future might look into this...

I thought it would be fun to do a little article about a very rare locomotive called the SD45X

It's essentially a super sd45 with the same 20 cylinder motor but given a boost to an insane 4,200 horsepower and was built from 1970-71.

About 7 of them were made, all of them went to the Southern Pacific. Note that it took an extra fan and even more powerful radiators to keep the prime mover from cooking itself.

All 7 are believe to have been scrapped...

Pretty neat! Reminds me of the GP40X. Loved the Southern version of the 40X, highhood and flared radiators just like the SD45.

The SD45X is my favorite locomotive of all time (check my sig and avatar). Getting another 600HP out of a 645 V20 engine was amazing at the time. I've seen one in person only once. It was just one of many idled locos lined up on a storage track at the Roseville yard around 1979. It was not running, so I've never heard it's engine in action.

This was the last surviving SD45X (EMDX #5740) sitting in Kentucky in 2001. It's clearly been chopped up and the back radiator housing section moved forward and dropped where the engine used to be. It's been reported that it was totally scrapped around 2007-2008. *!sad!*
