Speed-governed volume curve (F59PHI sound pack)

Unread postby lamanorbu » Sat Aug 05, 2017 7:57 am

Hello everyone!
I am working on a freeware F59PHI sound enhancement, so far it is coming along pretty well. I managed to get a decent K5LA recording, even fixed the horn script so that it doesn't cut the sound out on short blasts, new bell, rolling sounds, dynamic brake and many more sounds (all taken from real F59PHI cab recordings). As I strive for max realism, I would like to include a neat feature that some people had experimented back in MSTS days: I would like to have 2 different bell sounds, one for when the loco is stationary and another one for when it's moving. I figured I could do this by having the two sounds play simoultaneusly (I already managed to edit the samples so they are in sync) and modulate their volume with a speed curve, so that - let's say- the stationary sound plays till 3 mph, then the other one blends in. The matter is that I have no idea how to define a volume curve. Could anyobidy help me?

Look forward to this sound pack! Did you manage to get a decent recording of a K5LA horn quill?

That's one of the sounds I'm really struggling with. To be honest I don't even really like how quilling has been implemented in Train Simulator; in real life the horn button is connected to two different solenoids: the first one is activated at 50% button pressure and sends a reduced amount of air pressure to the horn, the second stage is activated at full button pressure and sends the big blast. Having two different buttons for quill and full blast really breaks the immersion in my opinion but really I haven't yet come up with a better option.
I got the horn sample from this video, it isn't a Surfliner F59PHI... but I think that the K5LA sounds pretty dern good (and the recording is good quality):

I own the original 2005 Surfliner cabride DVD from Facing Point (do you remember the good - or not so good - old days of MSTS Surfliner?) and I could extract some horn samples from there, but the quality would be much lower :(

Anyway, back to topic: I managed to get hang of the Blueprint editor and created an audio control proxyxml that does exactly what I want for the bell. Now I just need to know how to implement it into the sim !**conf**!
I thought that a simple copy-paste of the relevant parts onto the old horn control proxyxml would do the job, instead the horn and bell didn't sound at all...
