Installing Custom Horn Sounds Guide

Unread postby Unlimited » Thu Feb 10, 2011 1:56 am

I've seen on the forums here that some people are having some issues on installing new horns and creating their own horns. I was follow Amtrack505 YouTube video and guessing on which file it was and how to be able to get it in .xml format to edit the file directories the game reads. But before I even edited it, I backed it up in case I did a screw up. On this post I will try to show you on how to create your own horns for in-game from a video you record while rail fanning. I put this together in about an half hour. I hope I made it pretty simple where everyone doesn't gets confused.

1. Make a back-up file of any default horns on a locomotive before trying to put your's on.

2. Go to a video you recorded that has a horn that you like. And then trim the video to just the horn part that you want.
-At this point, you still can have the audio and video part, you do not need just the audio yet.

3. Now use a video converter (or audio converter) and convert that file of the horn into .wav format.

Tip: For me, it was easier to create the sections on horns (start, loop, and end) in Windows Movie Maker 2.6 (It allows you to import audio when the newer one requires you to have an image/video in the video to import audio.) When you publish your horn in that, the file saves it as .wma (Windows Media Audio). Then convert your three files into .wav format as stated in number 3.

Image

4. Once you have converted the files into .wav format, rename them to the locomotive you are trying to add a custom horn.

Image

5. Once you have the files renamed, converted; go into the audio section of that locomotive.
For me because I was doing the SD70ACe: Assets\RSC\SD70Pack02\Audio\RailVehicles\Diesel\SD70ACe\Cab
IMPORTANT: Make sure your name of the three files will match when you edit your Horn PROXYXML File.

6. Go into the file called [Locomotive Name] Horn.proxyxml and open it in a text editor.

Image

7. When your in the file, you will find 3 lines that say the file name for the horn.

Image

8. On those lines, change the file extension to .wav, make sure your files match the ones listed on that. Once the both match each file. Go ahead and save the file and close out of it.

9. Then go into the Railworks Directory and look for a program called serz.

10. Put the windows side by side and drag over the .proxyxml file onto the program.

Image

11. Once you drag over that file, make sure the file above the .proxyxml, the .proxybin is at the time that your computer is close to, can be a few minutes off. That way you know it updated.

12. With the old horn files, in .dav format. You can put those for a backup if you want to switch back. Or just leave them in the same place.

13. It will take some time on editing back on the audio files so they sound right.

14. Then you should have your custom horn in-game.

Programs I Used
Realplayer Trimmer
Realplayer Converter
Windows Movie Maker 2.6
Notepad++

I figured since this topic does have to do with problems, and a related fix, I'd move it to this category and pin it to make it easier to find.

Let me know if this may not be the right category for this topic.

This is because there is no doppler effect. I'm not sure how you do the doppler effect on audio files.

I used to use one called "Format Factory" and it always worked pretty good.

Ok, this does not work. I tried to install the P3 horns for the GP9 and it will not work. Followed the instruction to the exact.

To clairfy, I did not pay very close attention to instructions. Now it works. I was looking at the wrong file direction, I forgot, the cab folder is where you have to go.

Hello,

Today I followed the guide on the first page of this thread to help me make a hornsound for the AEM-7 and Acela Express. In the guide it says there are three types of horns: HornStart, HornLoop, and HornEnd. I can't seem to find those three horns in the AEM-7 or Acela Express Horn.PROXYXML files. !*don-know!* !*hp*! !**conf**!

It works for RW2, now since the upgrade to 3 I've tried it and never worked. I need to know how to set the horns. They now have 2 sets of horn for outside and inside the cab. Anybody know how to do it?

When I used to play Trainz 12, I always made horns, loads and loads of them. The way I made them is similar to Railworks. For my converter I just use http://convertfiles.com/ . It is free, online, and you can convert your YouTube videos straight from there and download them.

Thanks for the tutorial man! Now I can start making horns for Railworks too !*YAAA*!
