Procedure for re-painting N&W/N/S SD45

Unread postby RAILSOHIO » Tue Apr 15, 2014 7:19 pm

It has been some time since I started a new re-skin project. I refreshed my self with the old tutorials. But I can not get it to appear in the menu for anything. I am using the last version of RW tools. (Have not upgraded to the newest yet) Has anyone made a successful clone of the engine?

Depending on which model you decide to use, copy the subdirectory (for example: RailWorks\Assets\DTM\SD45-NS\RailVehicles\NS) and rename the copy. You can use RW Tools or RSBinTool to open the bin files and edit them with a new name and file structure. Finally, edit the texture files for your new road name. Good luck!

Hi Harry,

It is easier to clone the loco using RW_Tools as it then allows you to rename the loco without the need to manually edit the .bin files which some people find difficult.

I'll have to try that since even though I've done dozens of these I can still screw the bins up with the best of them.

Further to the above, I tried reskinning the above loco as below:-
1. Run RW_Tools, go to the Edit Assets screen and navigate to \Assets\DTM\SD45-NS\RailVehicles\NS
2. Click Add to List
3. Select the SD45_NS.bin
4. Go to menu 'Edit rolling stock/Clone selected item'
5. This brings up a window as under, I have just added 'Green' to each line -

6. This adds a new folder Assets\DTM\SD45-NS\RailVehicles\Green
7. All you now need to do is to select the texture(s) you wish to re-skin from the Assets\DTM\SD45-NS\RailVehicles\Green\Engine\Textures folder and re-skin them as per the normal RW_Tools instructions.
8. The following is the result with about 10 mins of work starting from 1. above, only Hood_nmc.TgPcDx is reskinned here.

Good advice Mike. I never really understood how that function worked. Sure makes things easier.

Just got a chance to try it out, here is what was wrong. First,I needed the newest SERZ. Second,I should have realized by the file size, the NS model is the primary engine. I was trying to clone the N&W one. Thanks to all,and again to Mike, for your utilities, they make this all easier. I will be able to "get busy" now. Joe

Well my dilemma is not solved, after all. The only engine I can clone IS the NS version. I am able to edit the numbers file, and change the road numbers. But I can not get the N&W version to show up. Even if I substitute the N&W textures for the NS ones, the skins do not change. That does include making sure I have checked the tic in the blue cube, when I open that box. AND refreshing the cloned engine by dragging it off the track, and re-placing it. Of course I am clearing the cache, and have tried deleting the blueprint pk files directly. I have used RW tools in various configurations (clone selected, cloned default) . I could remove all of the NS graphics from the hood, but that is just unnecessary, when I want to start with the N&W skin. Somehow,I am missing something simple. Ideas?

Hi RailsOhio,

It looks like you are not using the latest version of RW_Tools (v5.0.64), as there is no longer a 'Clone Default' item in the menu.

I have not time to try it today, but the SD45-NW layout appears to be identical to the NS, so I don't see why it won't work.
