Or to make it really easy, just unpack the .bin file from the .ap archive
after editing the bin file do I need to add it back to the .ap archive. I think I read that the program will use the extracted one first. for the RW TOOL edit asset I had to click on add to list then highlight the line under provider, any way LOL the driver is still there. so I have two locomotive.bin files the nd or no driver and the one with driver, so I removed the .bin file with the driver.

Changes must only be made in files extracted from the AP (with the same folder structure as that where the file is located inside the AP).
The changed file outside the AP will replace the file inside the AP (again, in same folder structure).
Never make changes inside the AP. !*hp*!

Any edited files stay OUTSIDE the .ap file (using the same path though, not immediately in the same place as the .ap file) and will be read by TS instead of the one in the .ap file

The convention for No-Driver locos is to name the .bin file something like SampleLoco_nd.bin. If it didn't previously exist, then this new No-Driver file will remain outside the .ap file, while the original With-Driver file will continue to be called by TS from within the .ap file.

An example for doing that would be the old F units that have no conductor. I have done this in many F units but totally manual, by duplicating the child in the bin and editing it.

Yes, in the Edit Assets screen, select your loco and go to the menu 'Edit Rolling Stock/Add Conductor to US Diesel' - this duplicates the driver on the other side of the cab.

Duplicating was easier than I had supposed. I expected a repetition of the same character and that I would need to edit the conductor name. But no, the conductor is a different character.

I have seen that where there is already a locomotive bin file with ND , so that is no driver. do I remove the standard locomotive bin file and replace and rename the ND locomotive bin file ?

The convention for No-Driver locos is to name the .bin file something like SampleLoco_nd.bin. If it didn't previously exist, then this new No-Driver file will remain outside the .ap file, while the original With-Driver file will continue to be called by TS from within the .ap file.

is this correct ?

If you want to add the one with no driver just take the one with the driver put it on your desktop. Rename it with the same name only add _nd just before the .bin. Cut and paste it back into your engine file. I am presuming you have successfully got this outside the .ap folder. Now go do the magic with RWTools on this new bin file. The game will read the one with the driver that's in the .ap and your new one that is outside the .ap that is the nd version so you should see them in the menu one right after the other.

so I would need the
same folder structure outside the .ap file as inside to the engine file?

Now go do the magic with RWTools on this new bin file.
what magic is that ?

The game will read the one with the driver that's in the .ap and your new one that is outside the .ap that is the nd version so you should see them in the menu one right after the other.
is that in the asset editing tab in RW Tools ?

so the folder structure to the ND locomotive.bin file would be this C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RailWorks\Assets\RSC\ShermanHill\RailVehicles\Diesel\SD40-2\Default\Engine where the .ap file would be in the ShermanHill folder and the loco ND.bin file in the Engine folder

The removal of the asset or assets described in above posts.

That engine folder being outside of the .ap correct.

all the above works with most of the scenarios except for Sherman Hill and possibly Ohio Steel. The only way I found to remove the driver was to remove the driver folder at the same level as the engine folder from the .ap folder. Sorry Jalsina. I did make a copy of the whole TS2018 Folder before doing any of this. The SD40-2 Still has a driver LOL, It also did not have a driver folder so it must have a built in driver or its being accessed from someplace else. where I would like to know. Thanks everyone !!*ok*!!

Do you now have a nd version? You are really making this harder than it needs to be. The original SD40-2 should still have a driver if you followed any of the instructions you have been given. You should now have one with a nd also. DO YOU?

I could tell you where to find the engineer but then I would have to kill you. *!greengrin!*

I only confirmed above what Mike SImpson explained on how to use RW_Tools "to duplicate" the driver as a conductor.
The no-driver version (ND) is another story. Do as Buzz has explained you above. I will explain it my way:

You need to make a copy of the engine bin "with drivers" and place it outside the AP, under the same folder path as the engine is in the AP.
Then rename the file with same name plus _ND, change the "name" and "display name" inside the bin and finally remove the driver and conductor (sometimes they show as driver1 and driver2) children, either manually with the xml editor feature or the child tool in the EDIT Assets/Content section (Display child entries) of RW_Tools.

In all this process or any other editing, never, ever, modify the contents of the .AP file.

I agree, you are completely over-complicating this.

Let me try MY WAY to explain.

The original .bin file is in the .ap file. It has an engineer. That *IS* your loco with an engineer. You do not have to create another one

You do NOT have a loco with NO engineer. Therefore:
- drag that same loco bin file out of the .ap file (it will still remain there as well, so your "with driver" file is not affected).
- now with this file you extracted, rename it to [yourloco]_nd.bin. Make sure it sits in an identical folder structure to the original (otherwise the game will not find it)
- now edit that file (manually or with RTW_Tools, whatever floats your boat) to remove the engineer, conductor, or whatever you want to do.
- also make sure the Display Name is changed to reflect ND, no driver, or whatever (otherwise it won't show up separately in the editor fly-out)
- when saved (as long as it is in the correct folder structure) you now have a NO-DRIVER version.

DO NOT try to put this new file back into the .ap file. Just leave it OUTSIDE the .ap file in the same folder structure as its equivalent inside the .ap file. The game will find it as long as you followed the above TO THE LETTER

That's it. Do no more and no less. Follow the instructions to the letter. Don't improvise. DO NOT PASS GO.

WAIT . . . The Sherman Hill Route .ap file already has an SD40-2 WITH engineer and an ND version which definitely has NO engineer in the cab (and the same goes for the SW10, the ES44AC, and the SD70M

I just checked.

So what are you talking about?
