Bozeman's SD-45's

Unread postby gtw5812 » Tue Jan 07, 2025 10:48 am

With the addition of the Bozeman Pass Route, lots of possibilities abound with 2 slightly different SD-45 versions. Along with the GN "Big Sky Blue" and Simplified Empire Build schemes (not to mention Hustle Muscle), there are lots of eastern roads and Midwest regionals. I am just putting this out there, since I know the "wheels are turning" and we have so many talented people in the community. I really like the way that the NP version in pretty well "weathered", I don't know if that is an option while repainting a model, but it really adds to it, in my opinion. I have attached a few pictures to "stir the imagination". Enjoy....and thanks for your consideration!

Best Regards,

Galen

Hi Galen,

Hustle Muscle is available in the RWA Library. It's the "secret" reskin in Marleyman's "Bakers Dozen" pack. It requires the DTM UP model, which doesn't have the plow, but has the correct nose (no headlamp):

Not to burst your bubble, but the Bozeman model has the correct Plyle headlamp on the nose, which was unique to the NP. So the best fit for the examples in the photos, is probably still the good-old DTM "UP" version, except for when a plow is a necessity, but then we go back to the nose headlamp config being present on the SP and Bozeman models. There's an ATSF model available also, but IIRC it has an AC unit on the cab roof, so I never purchased it when I did my NP and Milwaukee repaints (RWA Library); I only used the UP and SP models.

The show stopper on GN's Big Sky Blue scheme has always been the big placard logo mounted on the side hand-rails. They were the only road, AFAIK, that did this practice and only with the BSB scheme. Would be nice to see a GN version added to the mix of DTM offerings, featuring a plow and a placard (and paint-job of course) ..boom!, instant sales. Especially since we already have some "Great" GN routes to run it on.

As far as the snow plow is concerned there is one floating around the community that is a child object and can be put on any model that doesn't have one.

Actually Rudi, there are 2 versions on the Bozeman Pass Route. The BN unit would make a great "Hustle Muscle", since it is spot on with a correct horn placement and plow. There is no gyra-lamp in the nose, and it has a beacon on top of the cab roof. Here is a close up of the model. Also, the "billboard" could be made as a "child object". If it was the Hustle Muscle is the simplified GN Empire Build scheme, then it would be 100 percent correct.

Well Galen, I'm laughing at myself now, because I was so immersed in pre-merger "NP World", that I totally forgot there is a BN version included. Yes, you're absolutely correct, that would do nicely. I assume the "child object" you referred to, is something that would be designated in the bin-file? Perhaps one of the "un-lit" signs or small billboard objects would work for that purpose. Interesting thought, and I'm tempted to come out of retirement, but I've opened the paint-files for the NP unit and the template I built for the DTM UP/SP versions simply won't fit; it would require an entirely new template-build, which is something I'm not up for at the moment. I'll certainly keep it on the back-burner though, in case no one takes on the challenge in the coming months.
