The best way to learn is to look at the work of someone who has already done it.
For example, open one of Bermudez's blueprints (.bin files) with RW-Tools, look at the XML code and find what he has added (by comparing with the original file). Once you find the child object, copy this part of the code to your own file. Make sure you back up your original files first because you will make lots of errors at first. If external files are used you will have to copy them too.
You can also select an engine with a lens flare that you like, open its blueprint with RW-Tools and see how the author did it.
