In the very old days, they didn't even bother with brakes ... they'd simply shove the cut-off into reverse (I read that in a book).

Back before that, they dug their heels into the ground and would drag it to a stop! (from extreme trains)

That's stupid. What they did was have brakemen running up and down on the catwalks hand setting brakes on a bunch of cars before they started down long grades.

And you know what that sounds like at high speed? "BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG"

Also, from personal experience, its scary at 3 MPH with the throttle open....the 9 taught me that.

Maybe it's just perspective, but the boiler looks a little narrow. The real FEF is a bulky beast, huge boiler.

The sand/steam dome right in front of the cab is missing, and a lot of the filling details are missing. That certainly adds to the way it looks now, but I have faith in the master of Steam in RW. !*salute*! !!*ok*!!

That's actually not a sand dome or a steam dome. The boxy area you are referring to is called the turret. It contains fountain turret valves, a Wilson sludge remover, blowdown starting valve, and assorted plumbing.

the reason it looks narrow is because he has not modeled the running boards yet....

Correct!

There are other things that also give 844 the appearance of more bulk, such as the steam turret, the spring rigging between the frame and the boiler, the smoke deflectors, the connecting rods for reverser and front-end throttle, the grab rails, dynamos, ....

So far, I'm modelling only those parts that are in the original diagrams, with everything done to exact measurements. Once those are all done, I'll fill in the missing pieces using less exact measurements from photos ("by eye").

And from people in a position to go out an measure the real things you need!

Wonder what kind of Dynamo she uses....I know its a pyle.

By the way, do you have drawings or information for the cross compound compressor? I would like to believe that she has two Westinghouse model 150's....mostly because shay 9 happens to have one hanging off the side...and I know of another in pieces in a container out back
