I referred to LA as being my Venice of the railroads before, and this is what I meant. Many of the street lines have now been closed but I've tried to include anything that looks like it might have vaguely had a train run on it in living memory, within reason ovbiously. When you look around in Google Earth (which I thoroughly recommend) you can follow a street line for absolutely ages until you're lost, and they are and were literally everywhere. Like nowhere else I've ever seen in my (limited) experience. Sorry if this is common knowledge.
