The major update to the Union Pacific FEF-3 is now available (as a free, automatic update on Steam). Here's a list of all the changes to the overhauled model: UP FEF-3, Changelog, June 2021 --------------------------------------------- * Advanced and HUD versions are now identical, meaning that they are both equally realistic/advanced but also both can be operated with the F4 HUD. * Expert Automatic Fireman is now enabled by default (but can still be switched off in the usual way). * Expert Automatic Engineer added (toggled on/off by pressing 'E'), with the ability to manage the reverser, throttle and brakes to control the speed of the train automatically in accordance with the current and upcoming speed limits. * Improved sounds: - Air compressors - Chuffs - Clanking - Power reverser - Brake stand - Bell - Whistle (with the ability to toggle, using Ctrl Shift spacebar, between the new and original sounds) - Sight glass blowdowns * Improved lights: - Headlights now warm up and cool down instead of being instantly on or off. - The beam of light cast by the headlight on the ground and objects in front of the loco can be toggled on and off (ctrl shift H). - Running lights now include a 3D glow. - Light switch functionality corrected (identical to the new Big Boy). - Cab, gauge and deck lights are on by default and can be switched on or off by clicking on them. - Injector light added on the right-hand side beneath the cab floor. Class light glow brightened. Darker red lens on Mars light when switched off. * More authentic functionality for the 8-ET brake stand: - Automatic train brake "First Service" position and cut-out. - Independent brake "Locomotive Emergency Brake Cylinder Pressure Control" cut-out. - More authentic rates of change. * Live Injector: Now includes visible priming and regulation notches on the injector lever quadrant and their associated functionality (same as the new Big Boy). * Improved texturing on several items: - Brass handles (firing handle, automatic train brake handle and throttle). - Silver trim now looks like silver instead of white. - Soot deposits on the top of the boiler (Overland livery). * Back pressure and steam chest calculations are more accurate and realistic. * More realistic voluminous smoke effects. * Cab view positions modified slightly to give a better view ahead. * Initial set-up of the cab modified: - Doors and windows are opened. - Dynamo, air pump, blow-off shut-off, master cylinder cocks, running lights, left-hand cab light and gauge lights are all turned on. - Engine brakes are applied. - Automatic Train Brake placed in "Running". * More realistic coupler slack on the tenders and UP lightweight cars. * Improved flickering of flames in the firebox. * Train number boards - less flickering when viewed at long distance through the zoom lens * Locomotive number can be changed in-scenario using ctrl 5 or shift 5. * Smoke deflectors can be toggled on and off by clicking on the Tank BlowBack valve in the cab. * AI-only locos automatically blow the whistle when starting and stopping. * Animated whistle lever, cord and spring at the whistle air joint in the top of the smokebox.
I would strongly suggest doing a clean install of this. Delete the FEF 3 and Overland folders in Railworks and download a clean copy. I did not do this and had some sound and performance issues. The manual has been updated to reflect the operational changes.

Just an old Alaska guy trying to live in an insane world. Degree in life, Masters in common sense.
In order to install this pack, simply drop all folders within the package file into the following directory, and overwrite if prompted: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RailWorks\Assets" Make sure your asset folder's "read only" box within the file properties is unchecked, otherwise it will not overwrite.
Features: 1. Added additional main tender water capacities to Big Boy & FEF-3 to simulate the use of the Auxiliary Water Cars. You can choose these tenders in both the quick drive consist editor or the scenario editor; they are clearly marked 1 Aux or 2 Aux depending on how many water cars you are using. 2. Restricted water tender .dcsv file to only select 809 or 814, which are the two tenders with the special decals. 3. Adjusted weights and braking code for the water cars and passenger cars so that they are 100% compatible with the advanced braking script used in the Smokebox locomotives. 4. Reworked diesel physics for traction characteristic accuracy; prime mover behavior mode is selectable and elaborated on below.
User manual for diesel locomotive: Upon installation, the diesel operating mode is idle. Therefore, without user intervention within the file structure, adding the diesel into the consist will increase train weight by 200 tons without adding any tractive assistance from said diesel. Diesel operating modes are listed below: 1. Idle - tractive curve is zero, prime mover remains in idle regardless of throttle position. Ideal for use on flat terrain where diesel assist is not necessary. 2a. CTE derate, MU control box - TE curve limited to notch 6, RPM controlled through MU box. Ideal for use on 844 with the MU box on slight to moderate grades with light trains. 2b. CTE derate, regulator % control - TE curve limited to notch 6, RPM corresponds with F5 HUD regulator %. Ideal for use on 4014 travelling up slight to moderate grades with light trains. 3a. Normal (Full), MU control box - Full notch 8 TE curve attainable, RPM controlled through MU box. Ideal for use on 844 with the MU box on steep grades with heavy trains. 3a. Normal (Full), regulator % control - Full notch 8 TE curve attainable, RPM corresponds with F5 HUD regulator %. Ideal for use on 4014 travelling up steep grades with heavy trains.
In order to swap between modes, manipulation of two folder locations are necessary: 1. "Assets\Smokebox\UP FEF-3 Northern\RailVehicles\Diesel\SD70ACE\Default\Simulation" - For locomotive physics 2. "Assets\Smokebox\UP FEF-3 Northern\Audio\RailVehicles\Diesel\SD70ACe" - For prime mover behavior
Within folder 1, you will see the traction files, and also folders labeled "Idle", "CTE Derate", and "Normal". Pick your operating mode, and copy the files from within the selected folder out into the simulation folder and overwrite. Within folder 2, you will see the sound control files, and also folders labeled "UP 4000 Class" and "UP FEF-3 Class (MU Box)". Follow the same principle as above to switch between the two control architectures. The default is the MU control box, as that is needed to keep the prime mover in idle when the operating mode is idle.
