I keep seeing post referring to an offline mode. What is an offline mode and how do you access it? The manual has no mention of it.

Offline mode is a mode that one can activate on Steam by clicking on "Go Offline..." under the Steam menu tab. Offline mode does what it says on the tin by allowing one to play their games on Steam while they have no internet connection.

To get to the Steam menu, click on the Steam icon in the Taskbar, choose Library, Community, or Store. You will see "Steam" in the upper left corner. Clicking on that will give you a drop down box with selections, like "go offline".

This will sound obvious but lots of people forget it:
you need to be online before you can go offline.
More precisely, you need to do it once while connected so that the Steam client gets everything it needs for working off-line.
Then, I think you can toggle online/offline at will, but I'm not sure of that.
