TS2014 upgraded, now CDT on exit of any scenerio

Unread postby Zayphod » Mon Sep 30, 2013 9:07 pm

Hi, new here; be gentle.

Had TS2013 for quite some time now, purchased off of Steam. Buggy at first, CDT's happened often. Eventually found out about verifying files, ended up doing this a fairly good number of times, but eventually 2013 became rock steady.

Well, Steam just upgraded me to TS2014 for free. Well the price was right so I'm not going to complain. Then came trying to run it. All the material and routes I already had worked perfectly. Downloaded and installed the Scotland route. That's when things went, well, !*hp*!

First, I couldn't get the route to load at all. Figured out which folder it was and marked it .old, Steam re-downloaded it automatically. Like opening one's eyes after a long night's sleep, it started to work, then CTD. Re-verified and re-downloaded files. Started working better, one scene had a beautiful sky full of rolling "Missing Texture" warnings, but I figured I was getting close, so I kept re-re-verifying.

However, I'm now encountering a new problem: Every scenario, no matter what route, is impossible to complete. If you finish it, or if you save and exit in the middle of it, 90% of the time it results in a CTD. Is this a bug or is this just in the downloaded version of TS2014?

BTW, I'm still re-re-verifying on a constant basis. Sometimes it finds "Everything's Fine" and other times anywhere between 2 and 50 files need to be reacquired. I'll either get all these reacquired files and fix this problem or kill my HD from all the grinding I'm making it go through.

Love the graphics when it works, though.

I have not heard of this particular problem.

As for Steam's "verify local files" operation, I've always had a strong suspicion that it declares a lot of false positives.
When it says "20 files failed to verify", it may not always mean that those 20 files are missing or corrupted.
It could simply mean that the verification failed for some reason, e.g. a network problem.

Well, just tried it again, same problem - several scenario that I already had seem to exit normally, but most of them still give a CTD anytime I try to exit them instead of just going back to the menu. I guess in my long-winded way, I was just trying to determine if its just the Steam downloaded version that's having this issue (meaning eventually it'll smooth out) or if anyone using the disk version was having the same random CTD issues. Seems like it's the Steam version.

Anyway, thanks for the input. I'll keep working at it.

FYI, update. I gave up Skyrim all last week to

10 set graphics to absolute minimum
20 try running a scenario in TS2014, crash to desktop
30 Re-verify and re-download.
40 try again until successful, set one thing in the graphics a little higher.
50 goto 20

Lather, rinse, repeat.

So far, it's getting better, still have the once-in-a-while CTD, though that Scotland route absolutely cannot do a free roam start without CTD after all the tips screens are done. When I can get it to work (minimum graphics seems to solve its issues for the moment) it's some pretty nice scenery. At least the other routes are picking up and running.

It's been a long week/weekend. I'll keep banging away at it; it's worth it.

Start RW with LogMate (do a search here for "logmate" for instructions).
The log should help pinpoint the problem.

Got it, ran it. Two tests:
1. Just started the game up to the menu, exited, noted info in the log.

2. Started up to the main menu. Selected "free roam" and Eastern Lines of Scotland route. CTD.

Saved the log.

Yes, although obviously none of these errors crash the sim.
I have the same errors for scenarios that work OK, but some of these messages do point to missing assets and textures.

Now for your CTDs on exit:

- In LogMate, clear the logs by using File/Clear logs
- Exit the scenario
- find new errors in the logs.

Just out of curiosity, what are your computer's specifications?

Wait, "3316Mb installed memory", that's only 3.3Gb of RAM? Wow. It's said in a lot of places you need 8Gb of RAM to really run TS2013. Course, that could be available system memory, but it says "Installed". This is curious indeed. Try going to Control Panel> System and see what the amount of installed RAM it reports.

It's actually 4 gigs of RAM installed physically, but I'm running the 32-bit version of Win7 which only sees 3.3 gigs. As I understand it, Flight Simulator X will just not run on the 64-bit version, so until I decide to finally drop it from my list of things to play with, I'll stick with the 32-bit version. It does seem to work sufficiently with Silent Hunter 4, Dragon Age II, Skyrim, and TS2013, so unless there's a major issue cropping up with performance (and it will, eventually), I didn't see any need to go to the 64-bit version (yet).

BTW, I'm trying to cause a CTD on exit of a scenario. I'm selecting the Scotland route on medium graphics. Doesn't load; it just locks up on one of the tips screens. Have to bring up the task manager and log myself out just to get it out of that position. I'll keep setting the graphics lower until I get it to run.

FSX runs fine for me on Win 7 64 bit. all my games do. there is always compatibility mode, too. Old Paint just recently fixed his TS2014 issues by installing Win 7 64 bit and 8Gb of RAM. I really suggest you think about an upgrade. You may just be running out of memory causing the CTD. That issue may or may not show up on Logmate, either, since it's more a Win 7 issue.

You can take a look at these two Windows info monitors to see what may be going on, if it's a Windows thing or not:
Control Panel> Action Center> Reliability Monitor
Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Event Viewer
There may be a lot of errors showing so clear all the old stuff out first then run TS2014 and when you get a crash, open Event Viewer and see if it shows anything.

Well, tried to force a CTD. Success. I can't start any scenario at all now. Any route, selection ends up with a white screen where it's trying to say "something bad happened" and failed to load ... followed by a really long path where the letters are cut off at the top of the slit that I'm reading this in.

Managed to get this from the event viewer:

One thing: I have saved a copy of the Steam apps folder on a second HD (backs up a full copy every Sunday evening). At this point, I am wondering if I should (since I have a second copy of them already) just delete the routes folder and let Steam notice it, forcing a download again. Something's become extremely corrupted all of a sudden. BTW, graphics were set at absolute minimum.

Yes, good idea.
Also try running this:
- In LogMate, clear the logs by using File/Clear logs
- Exit the scenario, causing a CTD
- find new errors in the logs.

Do you have the /3G switch installed. *!question!*
I would suspect that your are running out of the Windows Virtual Address Space and that is causing your CTD.
This has a good method on how to apply it, but be aware it applies the switch for the whole operating system regardless of what program is running, and can cause issues.
This is the key line: bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 2560" - start at 2560 and increase by 128kb blocks until you get no CTD to a maximum of 3072.

NOte this NOT needed for a 64-bit OS it is already set at 4096MB.
BTW the ONLY way to run FSX properly is using 64-bit Windows it is not correct to say that it will not run in Win 64, most hard core FSX simmers have been running FSX in Win XP 64-bit, Vista 64-bit and latterly Win 7 64-bit - Check out the simforums. I guarantee if you run it in Win 32 and you will see many CTD's :D
Good Luck
