Is it possible to have too many addons?

Unread postby Hurst » Tue Dec 03, 2013 7:47 pm

I'm having an issue with Railworks. I thought maybe my copy of RW2012 was corrupt so I bought the Steam version of TS2014. But since I have the same issue,.. now I am unsure.

Anyway,..

I've been working on a route/scenario for about 2 yrs now. I've spent more money then I care to admit on downloads and I probably have every single freeware download possible.
I was always adamant about saving and backing up my scenario as I have had the game crash and lose all my work on more then one occasion. So when a hard drive failure caused me to have to reinstall the game and the tedious task of reinstalling all of the addons I had acquired,.. I began to have a very troubling problem. Hence I have signed on here when I have been just lurking and reading the whole time. Always found a solution so I never really had a need to register. But I am at my wits end trying to resolve this.

Installing RW2012 went with out any issues. Loading and running the included routes/scenarios worked fine also. It wasnt until I tried to install my personal route and all of my addons that I started to experience the game crashing to desktop.
I can install my route with out the addons and it loads fine, but textures, objects etc are not there. When I start inserting my addons to the route,.. or even a newly created scenario,.. I get about 3/4 of the way through the list and it just freezes. I Alt/Tab out to see the "Something Bad Happened" messaged and I have no choice but to close the program. It does this on both,.. My laptop and my home desktop computers.

My home computer specs are as follows.

Intel Core2Duo E8400 OC'd to 4ghz processor
4gb DDR3 Ram (2x2gb DIMMS)
ABIT X38 MAX mainboard
Nvidia GTX570 video card
Creative Xfi Titanium Fatal1ty sound card
120gb SSD for OS
240gb SSD for games
2x 2gb WD Caviar Black HDD's for storage and back ups.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

My laptop specs are as follows

MSI Gamer series
Core I7 4700MQ Processor
12gb DDR3 memory
Nvidia GTX 770M GPU
Onboard (Realtek) audio
1TB 7200 RPM HDD. Unsure of brand.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite the Core2 system being 5 yrs old,.. its more than up to snuff to run most things at 1080P resolution at high settings. Ditto for laptop.

My concern is that 4gb might not be enough ram for everything I have,.. but then my laptop has 12gb,.. so I dont really understand.

What would prevent me from inserting 'ALL' of my addons so I can continue working on my route? I can stop inserting at about the halfway point and everything works fine. But if I try to load more then 3/4 point,.. it comes to a screeching halt.

Please help,.. anyone?
I am an OTR truck driver and I have invested too much time and money to lose my route like this.

Thank you,.

Yes it is possible to have too many, but a more likely cause is corrupted files.
Here are a few troubleshooting steps:

1- Go to the troubleshootingsection on the RWA web site, and try the two tutorials by Bob Latimer.

2- Start TS2014 with Logmate, then try loading your route. Look for messages in Logmate about bad or missing asset files, blueprints, etc.

3- You say it freezes when you "get about 3/4 of the way through the list ". Does it
a) freeze always at the same point, or
b) at 3/4, no matter what order you add assets in?

If (a), then maybe you can identify exactly which asset causes the freeze, with the help of Logmate.

I'm out on the road right now and only have RW2012 installed on my laptop,.. I need to get to a wifi area to download and install TS2014. I have hotspot on my phone,. but only allowed 15gb transfer. I watch a lot of Netflix so I dont have enough to download TS2014 until after the 11th LOL.

As for when it crashes,.. I thought of that and during a fresh new scenario,.. I started loading my addons in and saved periodically until it got to the point where it would crash. Thinking well that must be the one with corrupt files. Negative,.. it would just crash on the next one if I skipped it, and so on after each one I skipped. Thats what lead me to believe that it might be a memory issue. It does the exact same thing in both RW2012 and TS2014. Though I only had TS2014 installed for 2 days before I had to head back out on the road so I dont have as much experience with it. I wont be back home till Dec 18th.

I will try the logmate as soon as I can get my hands on TS2014. I'll be in El Paso tomorrow and have some time to kill. I know a couple places to leech wifi from. So hopefully I can get it installed and try that. I am having serious withdrawal. I have invested soooo much time into my route,.. I originally called it my little town, but my wife now calls it Jim's World. I would go OCD on developer routes when I saw things like roads not meeting flush with crossings,.. or housing and buildings just randomly placed. I went into as much tedious detail at every inch and now not being able to recover it is like a big empty pit in my stomach.

I know no one will ever be able to see it or use it as I have used so many different 3rd party addons, only a serious Railworks junky like me would have enough to even make it playable. For me it was a way to escape and relax when coming off the road. Sometimes I would fall a sleep laying here in my bunk with the laptop on my chest. Wake up and go doh,.. better save before laptop falls on the floor and breaks.

Thank you for the advice. I will read the tutorials and see if there is anything I can do with RW2012.

Just a little advice if you need to download on the road without burning through your hotspot's data cap. Find a public library with wi-fi. Unlike most coffee shops like Starbucks.... they usually don't throttle you down with slow download speeds. *!!wink!!*

Wow,.. its working!!!

My route loaded and I can edit it now with out crashing!!

I cant thank you enough. I didnt think an issue for TS2013 would help me with 2012.

I followed the tutoral advice for How To Get Most Third-party Routes Running in TS2013 .
I went as far as Then choose “Fix Prov/Prod in RouteProperties.xml”.

He says,..

Then choose “List Providers and Products Used”:
Then choose “Fix Prov/Prod in RouteProperties.xml”:
When that’s complete, the P/Ps for that route shoul
d be only the ones required for the route.
Now try that route and see if it will run in TS2013
. If it won’t, there could be other problems with
it, but
the most likely reason is that, even though it is c
alling only the P/Ps it requires, the total size of
the called
P/Ps is too large for TS2013.

And viola,.. its my birthday!

Thank you so much. I want to call my wife and tell her I am so happy. Its almost midnite here and she is 2 hrs ahead of me. She'd kill me if I woke her. Wow,..I cant believe it.

Glad I could help.
Bob Latimer's trick has saved a number of route builders from utterdespair.
