Railworks for Mac?

Unread postby NDORFN » Thu Jan 03, 2013 12:03 am

Someone just asked me if RW is available for Mac? I've never even thought about it. Does anyone know?

I've had it running on my iMac- mid 2010 21" model - using parallels. it's goes ok - TSX will hurt, but I haven't tried since 2013 update.

Don't even get me started on how crap Apple is. I think this guy has a Mac because he's a professional photographer and the multimedia capabilities or interface or something is better... allegedly. Probably just the way they market them if you ask me.

What are parallels? I think he's got a pretty grunty setup so there could be hope...

That's what they all claim, same for music, but in reality, the programs interfaces are exactly the dang same between platforms. (Adobe usually). One platform just happens to cost 1300 dollars because they put the name Apple on it.

It's all image. Just like iPhones and iPod. I've got a Samsung which plays music... and about $1500 more in my back burner than those cool kids with their Apples.

FYI, it's more a question of interoperability. You don't want to be the square peg in a world of round holes.

I know several people in the Arts universe (designers and techies in graphics, sound, music, film).
They go with Apple because everyone on their network of contacts are using Apple products and file formats.

With the size of the files those people work with, they can't afford the time and space required for conversion and multiple versions, even if they had the IT expertise, which most often they don't. Most free-lance workers also don't have access to IT support.

Even if you have software on several platforms (e.g. Photoshop or Pro-Tools), you're sure to hit a wall sooner or later.
Real-life example: you travel 300 miles for an intense week-end-long session with your sound editor. You're bringing all your sound recordings (800 GB of raw sounds) and your Pro-Tools project files, on your external USB hard disk. Once you plug it in his computer... nothing happens. His OS can't read your file system. Yes, in 2013, you still need utilities for MacOS to read NTFS disks, and for Windows to read HFS. Those utilities have a long history of problems, particularly with large files. Most professionals won't install them on their work computer.

Well with Apple you are paying more for it's hardware reliability then for it's cutting edge specs. It has been tops in customer satisfaction for years. Macs only have a cutting edge spec every once in a blue moon and it's usually only on a single spec (i.e. Thunderbolt interface). Beyond that it's all a matter of preference.

One advantage MAC OS has over Windows programs is that in productivity programs such as video/image, sound and music editing programs, they seem to integrate and share data with each other more seamlessly on average. MAC seems to dominate in those niche fields in the professional and academic worlds.
