Hi

Todays computers are very complex beasts. Billions of data bits are constantly being passed around on the motherboard both to and/or from all its associated hardware; one bit glitching can cause a problem. It's actually amazing we don't see more strange problems than we do!

I've even seen a problem where a reset didn't clear a problem, it actually took a full power down to clear that glitch.

A reset can 'repair' quite a few strange happenings so I guess that should always be the first diagnostic tried. I know it's not an intuitive test but perhaps it might just save some troubleshooting time.

Like Gary said, any little thing these days will make your PC go bonkers. Heck, if my power goes out even for a second, it takes me half an hour to get my #3 PC back up and running.

This is a new laptop, right? Do you have the original driver CD? If so, run the thing and look for sound drivers. Install them. You may have to uninstall whatever sound drivers Windows installed in the first place (control panel, programs and options)

I also firmly believe, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" If things are running fine right now, stay with that. !*salute*!
