PCI-E 2.0 vs. PCI-E 2.0x16

Unread postby Shortliner » Fri Oct 07, 2011 5:02 pm

So, what's the difference between a PCI-E 2.0 graphic card, and a PCI-E 2.0x16 graphic card? My PC has a PCI Express x16 slot. Would a PCI-E 2.0 graphic card work in the slot, or does it has to be a PCI-E 2.0x16 card?

If your card fits in, it is 16x.

Use this handy dandy pic to compare. 8x slots are considerably smaller.

That's an old picture. There aren't any 8X slots these days, just 16X and 1X. With a board that has two or more 16X slots, if you run Crossfire or SLI, both slots will only run at 8X. Sty is right, tho, if it fits, it's a PCI-E 16X card. All cards in the past several years are 2.0 spec.

Yes, however, there are PCI-e 16x looking slots, however, they are wired to be 8x. You can tell by looking down into, or to side (to see the wires), and you would see only half of the slot being wired.
They exist everywhere. You may not see them, but they're there. Awww yeeeaaaahhhh, 20% Cooler! /)

May I ask a question on a related topic? I have a system thats a couple of years old with a 16x pci-e 1.0, I was looking at a mid range card to do me for now and seen this reasonably priced card, I checked the specs and seen its a pci-e 2.1 so I looked it up and found lots of forums with conflicting information, some saying its backward compatible to 1.0 and some saying it's not. I just thought i'd ask here to see if anyone had any experience with such matters?

Cheers

A mid range 2.0 or 2.1 card should do fine in a 1.0 slot. When you get into the high end cards they demand a lot of bandwidth, so it's a good chance one of them wouldn't work.

@ Simer4, those slots would be the secondary slots for a second card (or third or fourth). The manual always tells you the primary 16x slot so your card runs at full speed/ bandwidth.
