120-144 Hz monitors

Unread postby buzz456 » Sun May 07, 2023 9:51 am

I was just reading about fps and such (no one can seem to agree) and came across articles about faster refresh monitors. Specifically in reference to TSC is there any advantage to these faster monitors? All of mine are 60Hz.

I am consistently getting fps over 60 with a 60Hz monitor. I think my results are due to processor and graphics card. My computer is only a year old and had almost top tier configuration when I bought it.

Buzz,
For Train Sim, a higher refresh rate monitor would allow your game to look even smoother than it already does, given that you're already hitting over 60fps. I switched from a 60hz to a 144hz monitor a year ago and I am very pleased with the results; for one thing, the faster refresh is definitely easier on the eyes. You will especially notice the difference when rotating the camera in-game. The only other advantage I can think of is that you will no longer have "screen tearing" once your monitor refresh rate is higher than your in-game FPS.

A faster monitor would be a nice, but not critical for Train Sim. They are more necessary in situations where there are a lot of fast movements on-screen, like in first-person shooters. But given your computer's specs, I'd recommend getting one so you can take full advantage of your other hardware.

Here is a bottle neck calculator in order to check your processor/GPU compatability. https://pc-builds.com/bottleneck-calculator/

I try to avoid screen tearing if at all possible so higher refresh rates are very nice but I'll even run 60 fps with vsync to avoid it.
