What is Windows 8... !*roll-laugh*!

Sorry, couldn't help myself. *!greengrin!*

On a more serious note, I've never heard of a mandatory windows update. I wonder if it's actually some kind of malware?

I have 8.1 on one machine and this update is not listed anywhere.

What is happening is that MS has made 8.1 mandatory for all WIn 8 systems, so they are pushing it to everyone who does not already have it.

Ooops! Let me clarify - mandatory Windows 8.1 Update (not Upgrade).

Many PC users have been experiencing difficulties installing this and MS says that if not installed by May 13, 2014 then all further updates will not work, rendering the PC vulnerable. Enterprise systems have been given an extension until August.

Here is a typical tech thread about this issue - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_install/kb2919355-windows-81-update-fails-800f0092-and/4d4d23a3-695a-4bd4-b340-d2ce9c75919d?page=1&tm=1399727398395

This is pretty basic knowledge, but did you temporarily turn off your anti virus first?
Also, you can try safe mode.

There is the rare possibility that's it's hardware related. Very rare, but sometimes something like the BIOS might have to be updated, (If available)

Well that answered one of my questions. After reading Chris' link for awhile, I came back here to find your's Papa.
I was thinking that this is more like a service pack, rather than a traditional update.
They are really trying to force this one on people. I wonder if the conspiracy people are right?

I'm very glad I went with 7 at the last minute when I was building my current rig last year. I wonder what I'm going to do in the future though.

Frequent, large updates, cause a lot more problems for end users. Most of the time...

I've noticed a change from MS's end. For instance, I keep getting things like the Bing Desk Top thrown at me during every update check, even though I keep hiding it. !*hp*!
