Nah, the average consumer doesn't even know the difference between sockets and North Bridge chips. Gamers and geeks do. But most of them build their own rigs anyways. The basic info is all there. CPU speed and how many cores, amount of RAM, hard drive size and RPM's, video card specs, and version of Windows. That's all that probably 90% of people need as far as info. !!*ok*!!

yes, but are they giving you the older chipset at the new chipset price? Do you know if there is PCIe 3.0 available on the motherboard _and_ the CPU?

This matters if you want to keep the rig for five years and just upgrade the video card, which is already starting to utilize the 3.0 speeds, and certainly newer cards a year from now will.

I know this is all builder's talk, but I don't want to see someone get scammed.

If they built and sold computers that were designed to last, where would their 'repeat business' come from?
The stuff that is sold at Best Buy are designed for profit, meaning they sell computers that were built with the cheapest components so they don't have to pay a lot for them.
Full Disclosure: This was told to me by a Best Buy employee.

Example (I have not confirmed this to be fact yet): It's believed that Seagate now designs their hard drives to fail shortly after the warrantee expires. Why? So they can sell you another one.
Unfortunately reputation doesn't seem to be of concern for a lot of manufactures these days.

When price is the main issue with a purchase - as it is with most of us - you end up getting what you pay for.

I wish I could offer the OP an alternative, but not knowing in what area he lives, and what brick & mortar stores are near by, it's hard to say.

Now just waiting on my computer. Sorry I have not responded, but to be perfectly honest I do not know how to answer your questions and comment on some of the remarks made. As much of a PIA as this sim is, I love it still. I have been running the " other one " and hate it as much now as I did before. Maybe even more! For me this will be a GIANT leap forward. I cannot do even the most simple things like changing a horn without screwing it up. I can quote you piping specs, design, metallurgy, theory, and how to build it in my sleep. Same thing with repair to what is called "lethal service vessels". I am hoping that some of you will not mind that when I get all of this set up that I may be able to post a question or PM you for advice. Hawk, where would I post that? It may not be any of your ways to do a computer, but I just do not know how. I also have a strict budget that I stick to and will have to for a couple of more years. The last 4 years have not been financially good for me to say the least. PM for info on that if you want to know why. I could post why here, but I am not sure that it is proper. The only thing I can say is that make sure you have life insurance and just know that what you do in desperation has a terrible ripple effect through other members of your immediate family's life. If I am out of bounds Hawk, as always, tell me please.

For specific computer related questions/discussion, that would probably be best in the Geek Speak forum, the same one this discussion is in. *!!wink!!*
For problems with RW, try the Problems and Peculiarities forum.

Does that help?
