The stuff that is sold at Best Buy are designed for profit, meaning they sell computers that were built with the cheapest components so they don't have to pay a lot for them.

I have not confirmed this to be fact yet): It's believed that Seagate now designs their hard drives to fail shortly after the warrantee expires. Why? So they can sell you another one.
Unfortunately reputation doesn't seem to be of concern for a lot of manufactures these days.
When price is the main issue with a purchase - as it is with most of us - you end up getting what you pay for.
I wish I could offer the OP an alternative, but not knowing in what area he lives, and what brick & mortar stores are near by, it's hard to say.
